AsemconnectVietnam - With an import volume of nearly 786,530 tonnes, Vietnam is the largest importer of cashew nuts, accounting for nearly 95% of Cambodia's raw cashew nut output in the first 7 months of this year.

According to Vietnam Trade Office in Cambodia, Cambodia's cashew nut output in the first 7 months of this year reached 830,000 tonnes. According to preliminary statistics from General Department of Customs, by the end of July this year, Vietnam had imported nearly 786,530 tonnes of raw cashew nuts from Cambodia, with a value of nearly 1 billion USD, a sharp increase of 34.1% in volume and 26.3% in value compared to the same period in 2023.
Proportion of Cambodian cashew nuts accounted for 47.2% of Vietnam's total cashew nut import turnover, an increase of 9.6% compared to the same period last year.
With an import volume of nearly 786,530 tonnes, Vietnam is the largest importer, accounting for nearly 95% of Cambodia's raw cashew nut output in the first 7 months of this year.
In recent years, Cambodian cashew industry has developed at a "dizzying" speed, becoming the largest supplier to Vietnam. Cambodia is striving to affirm its position as a leading cashew nut producer and exporter through National Cashew Policy for a period of 2022-2027. The country also aims to boost cashew nut output, develop processing facilities, diversify export markets and simplify trade facilitation programs.
Vietnam is the world's leading producer and exporter of cashew nuts. In the first 8 months of this year, Vietnam exported about 478,000 tonnes of cashew nuts, earning more than 2.77 billion USD, up 22.9% in volume and 21.7% in value over the same period in 2023. Domestic raw materials for processing production only meet a small part, the rest depends on imported raw cashews, including a large amount of goods from neighboring Cambodia.
In recent years, along with Africa, Cambodia has also advocated developing domestic processing industry, gradually reducing raw exports. Vietnam Cashew Association has warned that if Vietnam cannot take the initiative in raw material supply, its No. 1 position in the world may be shaken.
A leader of Vietnam Cashew Association said that in difficult condition of increasing acreage, Vietnamese cashew enterprises can cooperate, exploit and develop cashew raw material areas in Cambodia and Southern Laos, including cooperation in research, transfer of varieties and cultivation techniques to neighboring countries. Enterprises will then import this raw cashew source to Vietnam for processing.
