Seafood exports in 2024 and forecast for 2025

 Wednesday, January 22,2025

AsemconnectVietnam - In 2024, Vietnam's seafood export turnover will reach more than 10 billion USD, up 12.1% compared to 2023.

Vietnam sets a target of 10.5 billion USD for seafood export turnover in 2025.
According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers, in 2024, seafood exports will reach over 10 billion USD. The shrimp industry has achieved an export turnover of nearly 3.9 billion USD, up 15% compared to 2023.
Pangasius exports will also return to the 2 billion USD mark in 2024, up 9% compared to the previous year. Exploited seafood exports also recorded success with a turnover of more than 4 billion USD. In 2025, seafood exports are expected to continue to grow better, possibly surpassing the 10 billion USD mark, returning to the 11 billion USD mark of 2022.
In 2024, pangasius exports earned 2 billion USD
In 2024, pangasius exports reached 2 billion USD, up by 9% compared to 2023. The Vietnamese pangasius industry is ready to conquer a new milestone in 2025.
According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), in 2024, pangasius exports reached 2 billion USD, up by 9% compared to 2023. Thus, after 2 years of many fluctuations in both export markets and domestic production, the Vietnamese pangasius industry has overcome challenges, adapted flexibly and with strong determination, seizing the opportunity to break through exports to markets.
Pangasius businesses have made efforts to improve and enhance productivity and quality, taking advantage of the opportunity of increased demand in many markets such as the US, Brazil, Colombia, the Middle East and CPTPP countries to compensate for the decline in China.
The year 2025 ahead brings prospects and opens a bright era for the Vietnamese seafood industry, including pangasius. Accordingly, the economy continues to recover and demand in major markets begins to increase strongly.
China, the US, Brazil, Colombia and countries in the CPTPP market bloc will continue to be important driving forces to help Vietnamese pangasius develop.
However, according to VASEP, the quality of fingerlings - an important link of the industry - is still not up to standard. Fingerlings have a low survival rate, are susceptible to diseases and are no longer seasonal. Currently, the loss rate of pangasius fingerlings is over 90%. The Department of Fisheries (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) is also aiming to reduce this rate to below 85% in the coming time, with a survival rate of 15-20%.
To improve the quality of the breed, VASEP believes that it is necessary to accelerate the implementation of projects and tasks to research and select breeding traits (disease resistance, increased fillet rate, salt tolerance, etc.) according to market demand.
Inspect and certify facilities that meet the conditions for production and breeding of breeds according to the provisions of the Fisheries Law. Implement the project to link the production of high-quality 3-level pangasius breeds in the Mekong Delta, including investing in the construction of complete technical infrastructure for concentrated fish breed production areas in Dong Thap and An Giang; complete the 3-level pangasius breed system.
Shrimp exports in 2024 maintain double-digit growth momentum
In 2024, shrimp exports reached nearly 4 billion USD, many businesses need to continue to create momentum for growth and development in 2025.
The Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) said that shrimp exports in 2024 maintained double-digit growth momentum when exports to major markets such as the EU, China and the United States recorded good growth.
The demand for year-end festivals in the United States, the EU and the demand for Lunar New Year in China contributed to increasing orders from these markets.
Although shrimp exports to Japan did not increase sharply, they maintained positive growth momentum due to stable exchange rates in the last quarter of the year and the recovery of the yen.
In addition, exports to smaller markets such as Russia, Canada, Australia, the UK and Taiwan also showed great potential in 2024.
