Leading items contributed most to total export turnover in 2024

AsemconnectVietnam - By the end of 2024, Vietnam's total export turnover reached 405.53 billion USD, an increase of 14.3% (equivalent to an increase of 50.81 billion USD) compared to the previous year, according to statistics from the General Department of Customs.

Computers dominated
Overcoming phones and components, in recent years, computers, electronic products and components have continuously ranked first in export turnover.
In 2024, the exports of this group of goods reached 72.58 billion USD, accounting for 18% of the country's total export turnover and increasing by 26.6% (equivalent to an increase of 15.26 billion USD) compared to the previous year.
The exports of computers, electronic products and components in 2024 mainly to the United States, EU, Hong Kong (China), and South Korea increased sharply, while exports to China decreased.
Specifically, the exports to the United States reached 23.2 billion USD, up by 36.3%; to China reached 12.64 billion USD, down 3.1%; to EU reached 9.9 billion USD, up by 63.7%; to Hong Kong reached 8.16 billion USD, up by 47.3%; and to South Korea reached 5.73 billion USD, up by 18.6%.
Phones of all kinds and components ranked second in export turnover with 53.89 billion USD, up by 0\2.9% over the previous year.
Exports of phones of all kinds and components in 2024 mostly to markets such as China with 15.44 billion USD, down by 8.5%; the United States with 9.82 billion USD, up by 24.3%; the EU with 6.28 billion USD, down by 12.8% over the previous year.
Machinery, equipment, tools and spare parts ranked third with 52.19 billion USD, up by 21% over the previous year.
The United States was the largest export market for the machinery, equipment, tools and spare parts group, reaching 22.05 billion USD, up by 21.2%. The EU ranked second with 7.36 billion USD, up by 23.7%. In total, these two markets accounted for 56% of the country's export turnover of this group.
Agricultural products made a breakthrough
In addition to the top 3 largest export groups mentioned above, in 2024, there were 5 export groups with a turnover of 10 billion USD or more, up by 1 group compared to 2023.
The new group joining the "billion-dollar export club" was seafood. In 2024, the exports of this group reached 10.04 billion USD, up by 11.9%, equivalent to an increase of 1.07 billion USD compared to the previous year.
Vietnam's seafood was mainly exported to key markets such as the United States with 1.83 billion USD, up by 17.6%; China with 1.73 billion USD, up by 29.4%; Japan with 1.53 billion USD, up by 1.1%; EU with 1.04 billion USD, up by 9.4%.
The remaining 4 "tens of billions of dollars" commodity groups were textiles and garments reaching 37.04 billion USD, up by 11.2% (equivalent to an increase of 3.72 billion USD); footwear reaching 22.87 billion USD, up by 13% (equivalent to an increase of 2.64 billion USD); wood and products reaching 16.28 billion USD, up by 20.9% (equivalent to an increase of 2.81 billion USD); means of transport and spare parts reaching 15.07 billion USD, up by 6.4% (equivalent to an increase of 910 million USD).
Another bright spot in exports in 2024 is the breakthrough of the agricultural sector. In addition to the two "tens of billions of dollars" commodity groups of wood and products; aquatic products, the agricultural sector also has many "billion-dollar" export commodity groups. These include vegetables, cashew nuts, rice, coffee, pepper, etc.
Commodity groups with strong growth include: vegetables and fruits reaching 7.15 billion USD, up by 27.6% (equivalent to an increase of 1.55 billion USD) compared to the previous year. Of which, durian exports reached 3 billion USD, up by 42.5%, equivalent to an increase of 893 million USD compared to the previous year and accounting for 42% of the total export turnover of vegetables and fruits of the whole country.
Vietnam's vegetables and fruits were mainly exported to China with 4.63 billion USD, up by 27.3% (equivalent to an increase of 993 million USD) compared to the previous year and accounting for 65% of the total export turnover of this commodity group of the whole country.
Rice exports in 2024 reached 9.03 million tonnes, up by 11.1% over the previous year, with a total turnover of 5.67 billion USD, up by 21.2%.
Vietnam's rice is mainly exported to the ASEAN market with 6.43 million tonnes, accounting for 71% of the country's total rice exports and up by 31% over the previous year.
Pepper exports in 2024 recorded impressive growth in turnover. The whole year, the amount of pepper exported only reached 249,000 tonnes, down by 6.2% over the previous five years. However, the average export price of this group of goods increased sharply by 53.9%, so the total turnover reached 1.31 billion USD, up by 44.4%.
Vietnam's pepper was mainly exported to the US market with 73,720 tonnes, up by 33.9% and the EU market with 48,630 tonnes, up by 35.3%. The exports to the Chinese market alone reached only 10,100 tonnes, a sharp decrease of 80.3%.
