Vietnam's largest commodity export markets after 8 months of 2024

According to data from General Statistics Office (GSO), from the beginning of the year to the end of August 2024, Vietnam's trade surplus with the US is estimated at 68.1 billion USD, up 28.6% over the same period last year; Trade surplus with the EU is estimated at 23.6 billion USD, up 22% over the same period last year; the trade surplus with Japan is 1.7 billion USD, up 30.5% over the same period last year.
In contrast, Vietnam's trade deficit with China is 54.4 billion USD, up 69.6% over the same period last year; trade deficit with South Korea is 20 billion USD, up 12.1% over the same period last year; trade deficit with ASEAN is 5.8 billion USD, up 14.8% over the same period last year.
In terms of exports, Vietnam's export turnover to the largest market, the US, reached 77.9 billion USD in the first 8 months of 2024, up 25.4% over the same period last year.
China is the second largest market with 37.9 billion USD, up slightly by 2.8% over the same period. Exports to the EU also brought 34.4 billion USD, up 18.5% over the same period last year.
ASEAN is the 4th largest export market with 24.5 billion USD, up 11.9% over the same period last year; followed by Korean market with 16.9 billion USD, up 8.3% over the same period last year; Japan with 16.1 billion USD, up 5.6% over the same period last year.
Vietnam's total export turnover to these 6 markets reached 207.7 billion USD, accounting for 78% of total export value in the first 8 months of 2024.
Regarding imports, in the first 8 months of 2024, Vietnam spent 194.5 billion USD to import goods from the 6 largest markets, accounting for 79% of total import turnover.
Import turnover of goods from China reached 92.3 billion USD, up 33.9% over the same period last year. Vietnam also spent 36.9 billion USD to import goods from Korea, up 10.3% over the same period last year.
ASEAN is Vietnam's third largest import market with 30.3 billion USD, up 12.5% over the same period last year. Next largest market is Japan with 14.4 billion USD, up 3.1% over the same period last year.
Import turnover of goods to the EU reached 10.8 billion USD, up 11.4% over the same period; to the US with 9.8 billion USD, up 6.9% over the same period last year.
