Exports of several agricultural products in October and 10 months of 2023

AsemconnectVietnam - In the first 10 months of 2023, the country exported over 7.05 million tonnes of rice, equivalent to nearly 3.95 billion USD, an increase of 15.9% in volume and 34% in turnover compared to the first 10 months of 2022.

Also in the first 10 months of 2023, Vietnam's coffee exports reached 1,313 million tonnes, down by 9.5% over the same period of 2022; the turnover reached 3.32 billion USD, down by 0.2%.
In the first 10 months of 2023, the exports of cassava and cassava products reached over 2.39 million tonnes, worth of 1.02 billion USD, down by 6.4% in volume and 8.8% in value compared to the same period of 2022.
Vietnam’s rice exports in October and first 10 months of 2023
According to the preliminary statistics figures of the General Department of Customs, in October of 2023 the country exported 635,102 tonnes of rice, equivalent to 406.76 million USD, average price 640.5 USD/tonne, an increase of 4.9% in volume, increase 7.7% in turnover and increase 2.6% in price compared to September of 2023. In comparison to October of 2022, it decreased by 10.9% in volume but increased by 19.4% in turnover and increased by 34% in price.
In October of 2023, rice exports to the main market Philippines increased sharply by 88.2% in volume and 86.5% in turnover but decreased by 0.9% in price compared to September of 2023, reaching 185,724 tonnes, equivalent to 116.84 million USD, the price was at 629 USD/tonne. In comparison to October of 2022, it was down by 30.9% in volume, down by 4.9% in turnover but up by 37.6% in price. Rice exports to the Chinese market in October of 2023 decreased sharply by 65.5% in volume, 66% in turnover and 1.6% in price compared to September of 2023, reaching 25,119 tonnes, equivalent to 14.85 million USD. In comparison to October of 2022, it also decreased by 80.9% in volume, decreased by 76.5% in turnover but increased by 22.9% in price.
Notably, rice exports to the Indonesian market in October of 2023 also decreased by 12.9% in volume and 9.2% in turnover compared to September of 2023, reaching 144,605 tonnes, equivalent to 92.02 million USD; but compared to October of 2022, it increased very strongly by 2,026% in volume and 2,777% in turnover.
Overall, for the first 10 months of 2023, the country's rice export volume reached over 7.05 million tonnes, equivalent to nearly 3.95 billion USD, an increase of 15.9% in volume, an increase of 34% in turnover compared to 10 months. In 2022, the average price reached 559.5 USD/tonne, an increase of 15.6%.
Leading rice export markets in October and the first 10 months of 2023
The Philippines still ranked first in Vietnam's rice consumption, accounting for 37.3% of the total volume and 35.7% of the country's total rice export turnover, reaching nearly 2.63 million tonnes, equivalent to nearly 1.41 billion USD, average price 535.2 USD/tonne, down by 4% in volume, but up by 11% in turnover and up by 15.8% in price compared to the first 10 months of 2022.
The next was the Indonesian market, accounting for over 14% of total volume and total turnover, reaching nearly 1.03 million tonnes, equivalent to 554.63 million USD, the average price was 539 USD/tonne, a sharp increase of 1,710% in volume and by 1,908% in turnover; the prices increased by 11% compared to the first 10 months of 2022.
The Chinese market ranked third with 883,967 tonnes, equivalent to 510.63 million USD, the price was at 577.7 USD/tonne, up by 16.7% in volume, up by 33.4% in turnover and up by 14.4% in price compared with the first 10 months of 2022, accounting for nearly 13% of the country's total rice export volume and turnover.
The exports to FTA RCEP markets reached nearly 5.05 million tonnes, equivalent to 2.75 billion USD, up by 24.2% in volume and 42.9% in turnover. The exports to CPTTP FTA markets reached 513,422 tonnes, equivalent to 279.64 million USD, up by 0.4% in volume and 13.3% in turnover while the exports to the Southeast Asian market reached over 4.13 million tonnes, equivalent to 2.21 billion USD, up by 26.1% in volume and 45.8% in turnover.
Vietnam’s coffee exports in October and the first ten months of 2023
According to the preliminary statistics figures from the General Statistics Office, Vietnam's coffee exports in October of 2023 increased again, reaching 60,000 tonnes, an increase of 17.7% compared to September of 2023, but decreased by 29.7% over the same period of 2022.
The export turnover reached 189 million USD, up by 12.1% over September, but down by 13.6% over the same period of 2022.
Totally in the first 10 months of 2023, Vietnam's coffee exports reached 1,313 million tonnes, down by 9.5% over the same period of 2022; the turnover reached 3.32 billion USD, down by 0.2%.
After 7 consecutive months of increase, the average export coffee price in October turned down, reaching 3,151 USD/tonne, down by 4.8% compared to September, but still up by 23% over the same period of 2022. In the first 10 months of 2023, the average export coffee price reached 2,527 USD/tonne, up by 10.3% over the same period of 2022.
Vietnam is currently exporting coffee to more than 80 countries. In 2022, Vietnam's coffee exports reached over 1.77 million tonnes, with a turnover of over 4.05 billion USD. The EU was a large consumer market, accounting for 38.3% of the country's total coffee export volume.
Vietnam ranks 6th in the world in terms of coffee growing area, with more than 700,000 hectares (after Brazil: 1.9 million hectares; Indonesia: 1.2 million hectares; Colombia, Ethiopia and Ivory Coast each have around 800,000 hectares). However, Vietnam's coffee yield is the highest in the world, 2.8 times higher than Indonesia's coffee yield, so Vietnam has the second largest annual coffee harvest in the world, with 1.75-1.85 million tonnes.
The EU is still the world's largest coffee import and consumer market. In the 2022-2023 crop year (from October of 2022 to the end of September of 2023), the EU imported 47.5 million bags of coffee (60 kg each), an increase of 3 million bags compared to 2022; accounting for 40% of the world's total imported green coffee. The leading coffee suppliers to the EU include: Brazil accounting for 35%; Vietnam accounts for 22%; Uganda accounts for 7%; Honduras accounts for 6%.
Vietnam’s exports of cassava and cassava products in October and the first 10 months of 2023
In October of 2023, Vietnam's export of cassava and cassava products continued to grow, the export prices increased sharply to the highest level since the beginning of 2023 until now.
The Import-Export Department (under the Ministry of Industry and Trade) cited the statistics figures from the General Department of Customs as saying that in October of 2023, Vietnam exported 268,370 tonnes of cassava and products from cassava, worth of 136.49 billion USD, up by 2.1% in volume and 11.1% in value compared to September of 2023. The figure was up by 12.6% in volume and up by 33% in value compared to October of 2022.
In the first 10 months of 2023, the exports of cassava and cassava products reached over 2.39 million tonnes, worth of 1.02 billion USD, down by 6.4% in volume and 8.8% in value compared to the same period of 2022.
In October of 2023, the price of cassava and cassava products for export increased sharply to the highest level since the beginning of 2023 until now. Accordingly, the average export price of cassava and cassava products was at 508.6 USD/tonne, up by 8.8% compared to September of 2023 and up by 18.1% compared to October of 2022.
In October of 2023, China is still Vietnam's largest export market for cassava and cassava products, accounting for 90.01% in volume and 91.49% in value of total cassava and cassava exports. The country's cassava products reached 241,550 tonnes, worth of 124.88 million USD, down by 4.7% in volume, but up by 6.2% in value compared to September of 2023. In comparison to October of 2022, it increased by 16.6% in volume and 40.2% in value.
The average export price of cassava and cassava products to China was at 517 USD/tonne, up by 11.5% compared to September of 2023 and up by 20.2% compared to October of 2022. In the first 10 months of 2023, Vietnam exported 2.18 million tonnes of cassava and cassava products to China, worth of 929.57 million USD, down by 6.2% in volume and 9.3% in value compared to the same period of 2022.
In the first 10 months of 2023, although the amount of cassava exported decreased, the exports of cassava and cassava products to some markets still grew well in both volume and value compared to the same period of 2022, such as Taiwan market, Malaysia, Japan, etc. However, these markets only accounted for a small proportion of the country's total cassava exports.
