AsemconnectVietnam - In the first five months of 2023, fruit and vegetable exports reached over 1.8 billion USD, up by nearly 29% over the same period last year.
According to the preliminary report of the General Department of Customs, in May of 2023, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports reached 466 million USD, up by 80.6% over the same period last year. Totally in the first 5 months of this year, the country’s exports of fruits and vegetables reached over 1.8 billion USD, up by nearly 29% over the same period last year.
According to the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, in the top 10 fruit and vegetable export markets, China, the US, the Netherlands and Malaysia have the strongest growth. Particularly, China's purchase of vegetables and fruits from Vietnam reached 805 million USD, accounting for 59% of the market share (last year accounted for 53%).
In terms of commodities, by the end of April of 2023, the export value of dragon fruit and durian was equivalent to about 23% of the total export turnover of the whole fruit and vegetable industry. However, at present, dragon fruit exports are slowing down due to China's harvest season and low consumption.
According to export businesses, in the first months of the year, despite being competitive with products from Thailand, Cambodia and the Philippines, Vietnam's fruit export turnover still broke through. As at Vina T&T Import-Export Company, while the turnover of the US and Canadian markets decreased, China was the "support" to help export activities grow 20% in sales in the first 4 months of 2023.
The export prospects in the second half of the year will be brighter when Vietnamese agricultural products are being favored by many countries. Dang Phuc Nguyen - General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association (Vinafruit) - said that the forecast for fruit and vegetable exports in the coming months will continue to be positive when entering the fruit season, especially the blooming lychee in the coming months. Besides, durian has the opportunity to rise to become a billion-dollar item when more planting areas are granted export codes to China. It is forecasted that this year, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports can reach the milestone of 4 billion USD.
