DAILY: Vietnamese pepper prices remained unchanged on June 2
Friday, June 2,2023AsemconnectVietnam - On Friday, domestic pepper prices in Vietnam's Central Highlands remained unchanged at VND72,500 – 75,500 per kg compared to Yesterday due to tight supply, according to Kinhtedothi.vn.
In Ba Ria-Vung Tau province, the maximum price for pepper stayed at VND75,500 per kg, while in Gia Lai province, the lowest price to VND72,500 per kg. Farmers in Binh Phuoc sold pepper for VND75,000 per kilogram, in Dong Nai province for VND73,000 per kilogram, and in Dak Lak and Dak Nong provinces for VND74,000 per kilogram.
Director of Xuan Tho Pepper Cooperative (Xuan Tho Commune, Xuan Loc District, Dong Nai Province) Tran Huu Thang said that in the past, farmers could harvest 6-7 tonnes of pepper/ha, but now every garden can only achieve 4 tonnes/ha. The yield of old pepper gardens is much lower, so the price increase of pepper is not enough to attract growers.
According to Mr. Thang, many pepper gardens 20 years ago still had high yields, but now many gardens are old after only a few years of harvesting. In which, the reason for the high pepper season is that farmers massively invest in growing pepper on unsuitable soils, so pepper gardens quickly fade away.
By the end of 2022, the pepper area in Dong Nai province is only about 10.7 thousand hectares, a decrease of nearly 50% of the area compared to the heyday of this crop. Not only has the area decreased sharply, the yield of this crop is also increasingly poor.
