Vietnamese tea regains market share in Taiwan (China)

AsemconnectVietnam - After 4 consecutive years of decline, Vietnam's tea market share in the Taiwan (China) market has increased again.
Import and Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade) cited data from Taiwan Customs Agency (China) saying that tea (HS 0902) and tea extract products (HS 210120) imported into Taiwan (China) market in 2024 reached 29,570 tonnes, with a value of 93.72 million USD, down 1.2% in volume and 2.4% in value compared to 2023. This is also the third consecutive year of decline.
In 2024, volume of black tea (HS 090230, 090240) imported into Taiwan (China) market reached 18,700 tonnes, with a value of 48.64 million USD, down 4.1% in volume and 3.4% in value compared to 2023. Average import price of black tea reached 3,170 USD/tonne, up 0.7% compared to 2023. In terms of volume, Vietnam is the largest supplier of black tea to Taiwan (China) market. Notably, while imports from other key markets such as Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia, etc. have decreased for many consecutive years, black tea imports from Vietnam in 2024 increased again, reaching 7,970 tonnes, with a value of 12.47 million USD, up 0.9% in both volume and value compared to 2023.
Volume of green tea (HS 090201, 090202) imported into Taiwan market (China) in 2024 increased again after 2 consecutive years of decrease, reaching 9,030 tonnes, with a value of 29.615 million USD, up 2.1% in volume but down 2.2% in value compared to 2023. Average import price of green tea reached 3,281 USD/tonne, down 2.1%.
Vietnam and Japan are two main markets supplying green tea to Taiwanese market (China), accounting for about 95% of total volume. In terms of volume, Vietnam is the largest supplier but import volume tends to decrease in a period of 2015 - 2023, from a proportion of 89.3% in 2015 to 75.0% in 2023.
In 2024, while amount of green tea imported from Vietnam increases again after 2 consecutive years of decline, bringing proportion up to 76.5%, imports from Japan turn to decrease after 8 consecutive years of growth, bringing the proportion down to 18.7%.
In 2024, imports of extracts and preparations from tea essence extracts (HS 210120) into Taiwan (China) market increase sharply, reaching 1,840 tonnes, with a value of 15.47 million USD, up 16.3% in volume and 0.2% in value compared to 2023.
Imports of extracts and preparations from tea essence extracts from Vietnam into Taiwan (China) market currently account for only a small proportion (less than 1%), reaching 12 tonnes, with a value of 142,000 USD in 2024, up 39.9% in volume and 21.4% in value compared to 2023.
Thus, after 4 consecutive years of decline, Vietnam's tea market share in Taiwan (China) market increase again, accounting for 76.5% of total green tea volume and 42.6% of total black tea volume imported into the market in 2024.
