According to statistics from General Department of Customs, in July, Vietnam exported 15,334 tonnes of tea, worth 27.4 million USD, up 9.7% in volume and 2.1% in value over the previous month; up 46.4% in volume and 50% in value over July 2023.
In the first 7 months of 2024, tea export reached 77,280 tonnes, worth 133.4 million USD, up 31.6% in volume and 33.5% in value over the same period in 2023. Average export price of tea reached 1,726 USD/tonne, up 1.5%.
Pakistan continued to be Vietnam's largest tea export market in the first 7 months of the year, reaching 22,300 tonnes, worth 47 million USD, down 3.2% in volume but up 6.3% in value over the same period in 2023. The average export price reached 2,100 USD/tonne, up nearly 10%.
After a sharp decline since the beginning of the year, this market is gradually regaining import momentum compared to last year. Main type of tea exported to Pakistan is black tea, which is also Vietnam's main export tea with about 80% of total export output.
The second largest export market is Taiwan (China), reaching 8,131 tonnes, equivalent to nearly 14 million USD, priced at 1,712 USD/tonne, up 2.4% in volume, 6.3% in value and 3.7% in price compared to the same period last year.
Notably, China is Vietnam's third largest export market with 7,826 tonnes, equivalent to 11.3 million USD, up 236% in volume and 107% in value. Average export price of tea to this market only reached 1,446 USD/tonne, down 38.2% compared to the same period last year.
In July alone, Vietnam imported 1,528 tonnes of tea from Vietnam, equivalent to more than 2 million USD, up 502% in volume, up 385% in value compared to the same period last year.
Remarkable increase is mainly due to the low base level in early 2023 and good growth in tea exports in the last months of 2023, creating momentum for 2024.
Vietnam currently ranks 5th in the world in tea exports and 7th in global tea production. Vietnamese tea products have been exported to 74 countries and territories.
According to Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Vietnam has 120,000 hectares of tea growing area, 257 industrial-scale tea processing enterprises, and a total designed capacity of 5,200 tonnes of fresh buds per day.
Vietnam Tea Association assessed that in recent years, Vietnam's tea productivity and output have continuously increased thanks to positive changes in varieties, cultivation techniques and production organization. In addition, many mechanisms and policies have been issued by all levels from the central to local levels to develop tea production and consumption.
