Imports and exports decreased in 2nd half of February

AsemconnectVietnam - The latest preliminary statistics from the Customs Department showed that the total value of Vietnam's imports and exports in the second half of February of 2026 (February 16th to February 28th, 2026) reached US$23.04 billion, a sharp decrease of 44.7% (corresponding to a decrease of US$18.63 billion) compared to the results achieved in the first half of February of 2026 (February 1st to February 15th, 2026).
The main reason was that import and export activities in the second half of February of 2026 coincided with the Lunar New Year holiday of the Year of the Horse 2026.
The results achieved in the second half of February of 2026 brought the total import and export value of the whole country in the first two months of 2026 to 155.73 billion USD, an increase of 22.3%, equivalent to an increase of 28.36 billion USD compared to the same period last year.
Of which, the total import and export value of FDI enterprises in the first two months of 2026 reached 117.10 billion USD, an increase of 35.9% (equivalent to an increase of 30.90 billion USD) compared to the same period last year; the total import and export value of domestic enterprises was 38.63 billion USD, a decrease of 6.2% (equivalent to a decrease of 2.55 billion USD) compared to the same period last year.
Based on the above results, in the second half of February of 2026, the country's merchandise trade balance showed a deficit of US$2.5 billion. Thus, in the first two months of 2026, Vietnam's merchandise trade balance showed a deficit of US$2.95 billion, while in the same period of the previous year, the trade balance showed a surplus of US$1.77 billion.
Regarding exports:
The total value of goods exported from Vietnam in the second half of February of 2026 reached US$10.27 billion, a sharp decrease of 49.5% (corresponding to a decrease of US$10.09 billion in absolute terms) compared to the previous period.
The export value in the second half of February of 2026 decreased compared to the first half of February of 2026 in several product groups as follows: machinery, equipment, tools and spare parts decreased by US$1.39 billion (corresponding to a decrease of 56%); computers, electronic products and components decreased by US$1.34 billion (a decrease of 30.4%); textiles and garments decreased by US$1.32 billion (a decrease of 73.2%); telephones and components decreased by US$643 million (a decrease of 23.7%); footwear decreased by US$579 million (a decrease of 59%); wood and wood products decreased by US$522 million (a decrease of 72.7%)...
Thus, in the first two months of 2026, the total export value of Vietnam reached US$76.39 billion, an increase of 18.3% compared to the same period last year, equivalent to an increase of US$11.82 billion compared to the same period last year.
Statistics from the Customs Department also showed that the value of goods exported by foreign direct investment (FDI) enterprises in the first two months of 2026 reached US$8.72 billion, a decrease of 44.8% (US$7.08 billion) compared to the previous period. This brought the total value of goods exported by this group of enterprises in the first two months of 2026 to US$60.23 billion, an increase of 30.4% (US$14.04 billion) compared to the same period last year, accounting for 78.8% of the country's total export value.
Regarding imports:
The total value of goods imported into Vietnam in the first two months of 2026 reached US$12.77 billion, a decrease of 40.1% (US$8.54 billion) compared to the results in the first two months of 2026.
The value of goods imported in the second half of February of 2026 decreased compared to the first half of February of 2026, mainly in the following product groups: computers, electronic products and components decreased by US$3.16 billion (a decrease of 39%); machinery, equipment, tools and other spare parts decreased by US$1.38 billion (a decrease of 50.8%); petroleum products decreased by US$318 million (a decrease of 61.1%).
Thus, in the first two months of 2026, the total import value of the whole country reached US$79.34 billion, an increase of 26.3%, equivalent to an increase of US$16.54 billion compared to the same period last year.
The value of goods imported by FDI enterprises in this period was US$9.18 billion, a decrease of 40.2% (a decrease of US$6.16 billion) compared to the previous period. As of February of 2026, the total import value of this group of businesses reached US$56.88 billion, an increase of 42.2% (equivalent to an increase of US$16.87 billion) compared to the same period last year, accounting for 71.7% of the total import value of the whole country.
