US maintained its position as largest cotton supplier to Vietnam.
Thursday, December 18,2025
AsemconnectVietnam - In the first 11 months of 2025, imported cotton reached over 1.5 million tonnes, valued at over US$2.6 billion, a 13% increase in volume but a slight 1% decrease in value compared to the same period in 2024.
The sharp decline in US cotton exports to China in 2025 has significantly altered global trade flows. In this context, Vietnam has emerged as a major destination as imports of US cotton surged, reflecting the clear recovery of Vietnam's textile and garment industry and its increasingly important role in the international supply chain.
According to the statistics from the Customs Department, in November of 2025, Vietnam imported over 106,000 tonnes of various types of cotton, valued at over $173 million, a decrease compared to the previous month in both volume and value. However, overall for the first 11 months of 2025, the country’s cotton imports reached over 1.5 million tonnes, valued at over US$2.6 billion, an increase of 13% in volume but a slight decrease of 1% in value compared to the same period of 2024.
Notably, the United States continued to maintain its position as the largest cotton supplier to Vietnam. In the first 11 months of 2025, cottonne imports from the United States reached 723,000 tonnes, valued at US$1.27 billion, accounting for nearly 47% of total imports.
Compared to the same period of 2024, this figure increased by nearly 130% in volume and 94% in value; in particular, in October 2025, the increase reached 141% in volume and 135% in value. The main reason was that the average price of imported cotton from the United States decreased by about 15%, creating favorable conditions for Vietnamese businesses to increase purchases.
After the United States, Brazil ranked second as a supplier of cotton to Vietnam, with 414,000 tonnes in the first 11 months of 2025, equivalent to $714 million, an increase in volume but a decrease in value. Meanwhile, cotton imports from Australia continue to decline sharply in both volume and value.
With an annual consumption of approximately 1.5 million tonnes, Vietnam is currently the world's third largest cotton importer, and also the sixth largest exporter of fibers and the third largest exporter of textiles and garments globally, after China and Bangladesh.
According to the Vietnam Textile and Garment Association (VITAS), in the first 11 months of 2025, Vietnam's textile and garment export turnover was estimated to reach nearly $40 billion, an increase of more than 6% compared to the same period, after a previous period of decline.
Vietnamese yarn businesses, especially those producing for export to markets such as the United States, the EU, and Japan, are accelerating capacity expansion. Many factories in Binh Duong, Dong Nai, Nam Dinh, and Thai Binh are operating at high capacity to meet the surge in orders in the third and fourth quarters of 2025.
The continued forecast of approximately 12 million bales of US cotton exports in the 2025-2026 crop year indicates an abundant and stable supply. The combination of high-quality cotton, reasonable prices, and the growth momentum of the textile and garment industry is creating a sustainable value chain, contributing to affirming Vietnam's position as a manufacturing and export hub in the global textile and garment industry.
