Vietnam's coffee exports to the EU increased sharply in the first 7 months of 2025 thanks to EVFTA

 Tuesday, September 30,2025

AsemconnectVietnam - The EU–Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA), effective from August 2020, has provided a significant boost to Vietnam’s coffee exports to the EU.

According to Vietnam Customs, from only USD64 million in August 2020, exports to the EU rose 7.2 times, peaking at USD466 million in March 2025. However, since then exports have declined month by month due to limited end-season supply, relying mainly on stockpiles, with the new harvest yet to arrive.
In July 2025, Vietnam exported 38,000 tonnes of coffee to the EU, worth over USD200.5 million. This represented a 12% decline in volume and 17% in value compared to June, but still an increase of 38% in volume and 44% in value year-on-year.
For the first seven months of 2025, exports reached 447,300 tonnes, valued at USD2.55 billion, up 16% in volume and 82.2% in value compared to the same period in 2024. The EU accounted for 36% of Vietnam’s total coffee export turnover in July and 43% in the first seven months, higher than the 39% share in 2024, confirming the EU’s growing importance as a key market thanks to EVFTA.

Export Structure by Product
Vietnam’s coffee exports to the EU remain dominated by green beans. While processed coffee still accounts for a small share, its exports have risen sharply compared to last year, gradually strengthening Vietnam’s position in this demanding market.
· Unroasted, non-decaffeinated coffee beans ranked first, with USD168.2 million in July 2025, down 17% from June but up 49% year-on-year, accounting for 90% of Vietnam’s EU coffee exports. In Jan–Jul 2025, exports of this category reached USD2.294 billion, up 91% year-on-year.
· Extracts and concentrates ranked second, with USD22.1 million in July, down 2.2% from June but up 112% year-on-year, accounting for 6% of EU-bound coffee exports. In Jan–Jul, exports totaled USD158.8 million, up 64% year-on-year.
· Decaffeinated coffee ranked third, with USD9.6 million in July, down 40% from June and 23% year-on-year, accounting for 3% of Vietnam’s EU coffee exports. In Jan–Jul, exports reached USD93.1 million, up 36.3% year-on-year.
In summary, despite a month-on-month decline, exports of green beans and extracts still showed strong growth year-on-year, reflecting the growing competitiveness of Vietnam’s higher-quality coffee products in the EU market. However, decaffeinated coffee exports fell sharply in July.
 Impact of EVFTA
 · Export Value: Since the EVFTA took effect in August 2020, Vietnam’s coffee exports to the EU have surged. From USD64 million in August 2020, exports peaked at USD466 million in March 2025 — a 7.2-fold increase — before declining gradually.
· Market Structure: Compared with the pre-EVFTA period, the structure of exports to EU members has shifted. Germany, Italy, and Spain remain the top three importers, though market shares have changed: Germany’s share fell from 36% to 34%, Spain remained stable, Italy’s share dropped from 22% to 16%, while Belgium’s rose from 7% to 8%.
· Export Prices: According to Vietnam Customs, the export price of Vietnamese coffee to the EU has nearly tripled, from USD2,000/tonne in January 2020 to nearly USD6,000/tonne in July 2025.
