Global coffee market:
After a strong one-day increase, both coffee exchanges saw a correction due to multiple headwinds. The US dollar rebounded, and fresh harvest supplies from Brazil continued to rise.
At the close of the latest session:
• Robusta (London):
o September 2025 contract fell USD114/tonne, to USD3,405/tonne.
o November 2025 contract fell USD106/tonne, to USD3,359/tonne.
• Arabica (New York):
o September 2025 contract dropped 4.5 cents/lb, to 297.35 cents/lb.
o December 2025 contract dropped 4.6 cents/lb, to 290.25 cents/lb.
The decline came amid several headwinds. The US dollar rebounded strongly. As of early July 16, the US Dollar Index (DXY), which measures the greenback against six major currencies (EUR, JPY, GBP, CAD, SEK, CHF), rose 0.56% to 98.64.
Recent data shows the US Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 0.3% in June, the largest gain since January. Prices rose for several goods including coffee, audio equipment, and home furniture—seen by economists as evidence that President Donald Trump's rising import tariffs are being passed on to consumers.
According to Reuters, the US's plan to impose a 50% tariff on nearly all imports from Brazil triggered a coffee price surge earlier in the week as American roasters ramped up purchases ahead of the potential August 1 implementation.
Meanwhile, Brazil's new crop supplies keep flowing. As of July 9, Brazilian farmers had sold 31% of the 2025-2026 coffee crop, below the 5-year average of 38% for the same period.
USDA projects Brazil's coffee production in 2025–2026 (July 2025 – June 2026) to rise slightly to about 65 million 60-kg bags, up 0.5% from the 2024–2025 crop.
