Wednesday, July 9,2025
AsemconnectVietnam - In the first half of 2025, coffee exports earned 5.45 billion USD, an increase of 67.5% in value compared to the same period in 2024. It is expected that for the whole year, this industry will surely reach 7.5 billion USD.
Germany, Italy and Spain are the 3 largest coffee consuming markets
According to the report of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, the coffee export volume in June 2025 is estimated at 130,000 tonnes with a value of 741.1 million USD, bringing the total coffee export volume and value in the first 6 months of 2025 to 953,900 tonnes and 5.45 billion USD, up 5.3% in volume and 67.5% in value compared to the same period in 2024. Average coffee export price in the first 6 months of 2025 is estimated at 5,708.3 USD/ton, up 59.1% compared to the same period in 2024.
Germany, Italy and Spain are the 3 largest coffee consuming markets of Vietnam, accounting for market shares of 16.3%, 7.9% and 7.4% respectively. Compared to the same period last year, the value of coffee exports in the first 5 months of 2025 to the German market increased by 2.2 times, the Italian market increased by 45.1%, and the Spanish market increased by 55.8%.
In group of 15 largest export markets, value of coffee exports increased the most in the Mexican market with an increase of 71.6 times and the lowest increase in the Chinese market with an increase of 22.9%.
In an interview with a reporter from Industry and Trade Newspaper, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Phung Duc Tien said that export target for 2025 is expected to reach 5.5 billion USD. However, the first 6 months of the year is estimated to have reached about 5.5 billion USD. Therefore, the coffee industry's export turnover is likely to exceed the planned target of 7.5 billion USD in 2025, an increase of 36.9% compared to the same period in 2024.
"The largest output is during the harvest season from December to April next year, so export potential in the last months of the year is not as high as in the first months of the year. In the last 6 months of the year, if exports earn 2 billion USD, total coffee export turnover will reach 7.5 billion USD," Mr. Phung Duc Tien shared.
Opportunity to expand market share in major markets
According to Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, the United States is the largest coffee importer and consumer in the world. Brazil is the largest supplier of coffee to the US market, along with Colombia, Central American countries, South American countries, Southeast Asia, including Vietnam. This is a key market for exporting high-end specialty coffee, deeply processed products, value-added products and instant coffee.
However, current global coffee supply is decreasing due to the impacts of climate change, high world coffee prices, and high consumption demand, so the Vietnamese coffee industry can still respond to have the opportunity to continue to maintain market share in the United States, promoting the Robusta coffee segment.
The EU is the largest market for Vietnamese coffee. The EU classifies Vietnam in the 'low risk' group for deforestation, helping businesses increase their competitiveness in this market. Coffee exports to this market are very promising. However, Vietnamese coffee exporting businesses will have to fully comply with all requirements of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).
Mr. Nguyen Do Anh Tuan - Director of Department of International Cooperation (Ministry of Agriculture and Environment) - emphasized that the core factor for operating the EUDR is full data and ability to share information according to EU requirements. Vietnam is currently classified in the "low risk" group according to the EU's classification. This helps reduce frequency of checking export shipments to 1%, instead of 3% for the “medium risk” group or 9% for the “high risk” group. However, the most important part now is that local data, farmers, traders, must be sufficient for businesses to declare traceability records.
Accordingly, data serving EUDR is not only a state management resource, but also a tool for businesses to use directly. Data management and sharing need to be synchronous and transparent while still ensuring information security.
From now until the beginning of 2026, there is not much time left, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Hoang Trung requested, it is necessary to move from the pilot phase to the comprehensive implementation of EUDR. Ensure that by January 1, 2026, coffee exports to the EU must take place smoothly, without interruption. All conditions on traceability, data, records and techniques need to be completed before this time.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment believes that the EU market is looking to open up cooperation opportunities in Asia, the Middle East..., which will be an opportunity for Vietnamese coffee. In addition, the coffee industry can shift its focus to the Northeast Asia region (China, Japan, South Korea), which are strong consumer markets for Vietnamese Robusta coffee. At the same time, focus on finding the Indian market because of its low prices and transportation costs.
