Pepper exports: Decrease in quantity, increase in value

 Friday, June 27,2025

AsemconnectVietnam - Pepper exports increased sharply in the first 5 months of 2025. The industry shifted to improving quality from the root to increase value and conquer demanding markets.

Pepper export price increased by more than 60%
According to the report of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, the pepper export volume in May 2025 is estimated at 25 thousand tons with a value of 176 million USD, bringing the total pepper export volume and value in the first 5 months of 2025 to 98.6 thousand tons and 684.4 million USD, down 13.6% in volume but up 39.2% in value compared to the same period in 2024. The average pepper export price in the first 5 months of 2025 is estimated at 6,937.4 USD/ton, up 61.1% compared to the same period in 2024.
The United States, Germany and India are the 3 largest pepper consuming markets of Vietnam, accounting for market shares of 26.1%, 9.7% and 8.1% respectively. Compared to the same period last year, the export value of pepper in the first 4 months of 2025 to the US market increased by 32.4%, the German market increased by 87.8%, and the Indian market increased by 84.1%. In the group of 15 largest export markets, the export value of pepper increased the most in the UK market with an increase of 97.9% and decreased the most in the Netherlands market with a decrease of 10.1%.
Talking to reporters of Cong Thuong Newspaper, Mr. Hoang Phuoc Binh, former Permanent Vice President of Chu Se Pepper Association (Gia Lai) said that the demand for pepper is increasing in many markets, while Vietnam's pepper output is on the decline, farmers are proactively keeping goods in warehouses, this is a factor that makes the advantage in the market tilt towards supply. In the context that the cultivated area cannot increase sharply, the pepper market is forecast to continue to be scarce in the medium and long term.
Improving the quality, maintaining the reputation and brand of Vietnamese pepper
According to Mr. Le Viet Anh, Chief of Office of the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA), a very important market that the Vietnamese pepper industry needs to focus on is China. Each year, this country has a demand for 90-100 thousand tons of pepper, of which domestic production can only meet 20-30 thousand tons, the remaining 60-70 thousand tons must be imported. The current problem of the Vietnamese pepper industry is to organize pepper exports to China in a systematic way to increase the position, market share, competitiveness... of Vietnamese pepper in this market.
Along with China, the EU is also one of the key markets for Vietnamese pepper. Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Phung Duc Tien said that this is one of the four largest export markets for agricultural, forestry and fishery products of Vietnam. Some product groups with potential to expand in the EU market include: Value-added processed seafood, processed coffee, fresh and processed fruits and vegetables, cashew nuts, wooden furniture, rubber, pepper and spices.
To expand the export market for key agricultural, forestry and fishery products, including pepper, Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien said that in recent times, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has implemented many effective policies to improve the quality of agricultural products and improve the quality control system, meeting the strict requirements of the EU market.
From the association's perspective, speaking to reporters from the Industry and Trade Newspaper, Ms. Hoang Thi Lien - President of the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association - said that in the context of a shortage of supply in the world market, while Vietnamese pepper is still considered to have superior quality, this is an opportunity for the Vietnamese pepper industry to enter a new phase, taking quality and brand as the foundation, gradually conquering high-end markets and building a sustainable position in the international market.
However, for markets with high standards, strict quality requirements but good profit margins, businesses must pay more attention to quality control, in order to improve the stability and adaptability of products to market fluctuations.
To accompany the pepper industry, VPSA cooperates with exporting enterprises to organize a series of training courses in key pepper growing areas to raise farmers' awareness of cultivation, processing and preservation, focusing on controlling pesticide residues (MRLs) and preventing the risk of contamination with other chemicals such as red sudan during the process of harvesting, drying and preserving pepper.
In addition, farmers and cooperative members have access to information on the MRLs situation in pepper and warnings from import markets. Identify types of tarpaulins that are at risk of causing sudan contamination and provide instructions on safe pepper drying and preservation processes.
In the coming time, VPSA will continue to coordinate with localities, specialized agencies and enterprises to expand the training program, while strengthening supervision of the use of input materials to ensure food hygiene and safety standards right from the source.
This contributes to effectively preventing the risk of pepper being contaminated with pesticides right from the initial production stage at households in key growing areas. At the same time, it contributes to maintaining the reputation and brand of Vietnamese pepper, ensuring the requirements of demanding export markets such as the EU, the US, Japan, etc., aiming to build a safe and sustainable product value chain from production to processing and consumption.
