Vietnam’s imports of goods from US increased in April

 Monday, May 12,2025

AsemconnectVietnam - The United States remains one of Vietnam's key import markets.

Vietnam’s imports of goods from the US increased by nearly 28%
According to newly released statistics from the General Department of Customs, Vietnam spent 1.57 billion USD on imports from the US in April of 2025.
This result represents a significant increase of nearly 40.2% compared to the same period in 2024.
Overall, in the first four months of the year, the total import value of goods from the US reached 5.66 billion USD, an increase of 25.78% compared to the same period last year (equivalent to an increase of 1.16 billion USD).
The largest import group from the US was computers, electronic products, and components, with a value of 1.82 billion USD, up by 58.26%.
Several other commodity groups achieved import values in the hundreds of millions of USD, including: various types of cotton; machinery, equipment, tools, and spare parts; raw plastics; animal feed and raw materials; vegetables and fruits, etc.
Regarding the increase in imports from the US, on May 7, 2025, at the Ministry of Industry and Trade's headquarter, the Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien – Head of the Government Negotiation Delegation – chaired a working session with major Vietnamese corporations, general corporations, and enterprises such as: Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (PVN), Vietnam National Petroleum Group (Petrolimex), Vietnam Gas Corporation (PV Gas), Vietnam Electricity (EVN), Vietnam National Coal - Mineral Industries Holding Corporation Limited (TKV), Vietnam National Chemical Group, Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet Aviation Joint Stock Company, Truong Hai Auto Corporation (THACO Industry), Viettel Military Industry and Telecoms Group (Viettel), Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT), etc.
Over the past years, these enterprises have imported substantial quantities of products such as aircraft, machinery, equipment, turbines for gas power plants, power transmission systems, GPU chips, raw materials, and fuels from the US, with a total value reaching billions of USD.
At the meeting, representatives of the enterprises reported on the implementation status of signed purchase agreements in 2025; assessed and forecasted the demand for imports, procurement of equipment, goods services, raw materials, and fuels in which the US has strengths this year and in the following years. They also stated that from now until June 2025, they will strengthen meetings and work sessions with US partners to promote contracts to materialize signed agreements and memorandums of understanding. According to the Minister of Industry and Trade, Vietnam currently has a large, high-value, and stable demand for goods, equipment, and services from the US. These are all products in which the US has strengths and Vietnam has needs. However, the trade exchange between the two countries has not yet truly matched its potential.
Therefore, Mr. Nguyen Hong Dien suggested that both sides need to urgently review and promptly remove difficulties and obstacles, creating favorable conditions for businesses in the buying and selling of essential products that complement each other's needs.
The Minister of Industry and Trade also requested businesses to be more proactive in realizing this great potential in the near future. This is a practical action to help promote economic, trade, and investment cooperation between the two countries in a substantial, increasingly in-depth, and effective manner, while also contributing to a balanced, harmonious, and sustainable trade balance.
