Wheat import markets in 2024

AsemconnectVietnam - In 2024, the country's wheat import volume reached nearly 5.74 million tonnes, equivalent to nearly 1.58 billion USD, an increase of 22.5% in volume and 1.16% in value compared to 2023.

According to preliminary statistics from the General Department of Customs, in December of 2024, the country imported 367,333 tonnes of wheat, equivalent to 100.89 million USD, with an average price of 274.7 USD/tonne, an increase of 3.5% in volume, but a decrease of 0.6% in value compared to November of 2024 and a decrease of 3.9% in price. In comparison to December of 2023, there was a sharp decrease of 47.6% in volume, a decrease of 48.6% in value and a decrease of 2% in price.
In general, in 2024, the country's imported wheat volume reached nearly 5.74 million tonnes, equivalent to nearly 1.58 billion USD, an increase of 22.5% in volume and 1.16% in value compared to 2023, with an average price of 274.9 USD/tonne, down by 17.4%.
Ukraine was the largest market supplying wheat to Vietnam in 2024, accounting for 26.2% of the total volume and 24.4% of the total wheat import turnover of the country, reaching over 1.5 million tonnes, equivalent to 384.87 million USD, the average price was 255.9 USD/tonne, a sharp increase of 144.5% in volume, 130.9% in turnover but a decrease of 5.6% in price compared to 2023.
In December of 2024 alone, 80,557 tonnes were imported, equivalent to 21.1 million USD, the average price was 261.9 USD/tonne, a sharp increase of 63.4% in volume and 67.9% in turnover compared to November of 2024 and the price increased slightly by 2.7%. Compared to December of 2023, it decreased sharply by over 73% in both volume and turnover and decreased by 0.4% in price.
The second largest market was Australia, accounting for 20.9% of the total volume and 23% of the total turnover, reaching 1.2 million tonnes, equivalent to 362.42 million USD, with an average price of 302.3 USD/tonne, a sharp decrease of 55.8% in volume, 60.8% in turnover and 11.4% in price compared to 2023.
The next was the Brazilian market, reaching 1.17 million tonnes, equivalent to 293.14 million USD, with a price of 249.6 USD/tonne, accounting for 20.5% of the total volume and 18.6% of the total wheat import turnover of the country, a sharp increase of 348% in volume, an increase of 205.5% in turnover but a decrease of 31.8% in price.
Wheat imports from the US market reached 484,895 tonnes, equivalent to 149.8 million USD, priced at 308.9 USD/tonne, up by 29.8% in volume, up by 5.3% in value but down by 18.9% in price compared to 2023.
