Import and export highlights in 2024

AsemconnectVietnam - In 2024, Vietnam’s imports and exports of goods set a new record of 786.29 billion USD, including many outstanding results from key markets and industries.

According to the preliminary statistics figures from the General Department of Customs, in December of 2024, the total import and export turnover of goods nationwide reached 70.53 billion USD, an increase of 6.2% (equivalent to an increase of 4.13 billion USD) compared to the previous month.
In which, the export value reached 35.53 billion USD, an increase of 5.3% (equivalent to an increase of 1.8 billion USD) and the import value was 35 billion USD, an increase of 7.2% (equivalent to an increase of 2.33 billion USD).
The results achieved in December brought the total import-export turnover in 2024 to 786.29 billion USD, an increase of 15.4% (equivalent to an increase of 105.22 billion USD) compared to the previous year.
Of which, exports reached 405.53 billion USD, an increase of 14.3% (equivalent to an increase of 50.81 billion USD) and imports reached 380.76 billion USD, an increase of 16.7% (equivalent to an increase of 54.41 billion USD).
Thus, Vietnam's trade balance of goods in 2024 had a surplus of 24.77 billion USD. However, this figure was lower than the trade surplus of 28.36 billion USD of the previous year.
In 2024, the import-export turnover of FDI enterprises reached 529.86 billion USD, an increase of 13.6% (equivalent to an increase of 63.62 billion USD) compared to the same period last year.
Of which, exports reached 289.21 billion USD, up by 12.5% (equivalent to an increase of 32.03 billion USD) and imports were 240.65 billion USD, up by 15.1% (equivalent to an increase of 31.59 billion USD) compared to 2023.
Meanwhile, imports and exports of domestic enterprises reached 256.44 billion USD, up by 19.4% (equivalent to an increase of 41.59 billion USD). The export value of domestic enterprises reached 116.33 billion USD, up by 19.3% (equivalent to an increase of 18.78 billion USD) and imports were 140.11 billion USD, up by 19.5% (equivalent to an increase of 22.82 billion USD).
The United States - a hundred billion dollar export market
A notable result of 2024 was that many important export markets of Vietnam have very positive growth.
First of all, we should mention the world's largest economy - the United States. The exports of goods to the US market in 2024 reached 119.46 billion USD, an increase of 23.2% (equivalent to an increase of 22.48 billion USD) compared to the previous year and accounted for 29.5% of the country's total export turnover.
There were 16 groups of goods exported to the US with a turnover of 1 billion USD or more. In which, the leading group was computers, electronic products and components reaching 23.2 billion USD, an increase of 36.3% (equivalent to an increase of 6.18 billion USD).
Other groups of goods include: machinery, equipment, tools and spare parts reaching 22.05 billion USD, an increase of 21.2% (equivalent to an increase of 3.85 billion USD); textiles reaching 16.15 billion USD, an increase of 11.6% (equivalent to an increase of 1.69 billion USD); phones of all kinds and components reached 9.82 billion USD, up 24.3% (equivalent to an increase of 1.92 billion USD); wood and wood products reached 9.06 billion USD, up by 24% (equivalent to an increase of 1.75 billion USD).
China was Vietnam's second largest export market with a turnover of 60.89 billion USD. However, this result only increased slightly by 0.3% compared to the previous year.
In fact, the export of goods to China in recent years has tended to slow down. Specifically, in 2020 it increased by 17.9%; in 2021 it increased by 14.3%; in 2022 it increased by 3.2%; in 2023 it increased by 5.3% and in 2024 it increased by only 0.3%.
The main export groups to China in 2024 include: phones of all kinds and components reaching 15.44 billion USD, down by 8.5% (equivalent to a decrease of 1.43 billion USD); computers, electronic products and components reaching 12.64 billion USD, down by 3.1% (equivalent to a decrease of 406 million USD); fruits and vegetables reaching 4.63 billion USD, up by 27.3% (equivalent to an increase of 993 million USD).
The European Union (EU) was the third most important export market of Vietnam with a total turnover of 51.66 billion USD, up by 18.5% (equivalent to an increase of 8.08 billion USD) compared to the previous year.
The largest export group to the EU were computers, electronic products and components with 10.76 billion USD, up by 66.9% (equivalent to an increase of 4.31 billion USD).
Other major commodity groups were machinery, equipment, tools, and other spare parts reached 8.72 billion USD, up by 24.9% (equivalent to an increase of 1.74 billion USD); phones of all kinds and components reached 7.38 billion USD, down by 13.4% (equivalent to a decrease of 1.14 billion USD). In addition to the 3 leading names mentioned above, other important export markets include ASEAN with 36.54 billion USD, up by 13.6% (equivalent to an increase of 4.37 billion USD) compared to the previous year; South Korea with 25.55 billion USD, up by 9% (equivalent to an increase of 2.1 billion USD); Japan reached 24.59 billion USD, up by 5.6% (equivalent to an increase of 1.3 billion USD); Hong Kong (China) 12.42 billion USD, up sharply by 29% (equivalent to an increase of 2.79 billion USD).
