Exports to some ASEAN countries in first 8 months of 2024

AsemconnectVietnam - According to statistics from the General Department of Customs, Vietnam's exports of goods to some ASEAN member countries increased in the first 8 months of 2024.

Specifically, exports to Thailand in the first 8 months of 2024 reached more than 5.2 billion USD, while exports to Indonesia reached 4.1 billion USD and exports to Malaysia reached 3.48 billion USD.

According to statistics from the General Department of Customs, Vietnam's export turnover to the Thai market in August 2024 reached 623 million USD, down by 10.5% compared to the previous month. In the first 8 months of 2024, the figure reached 5.2 billion USD, up by 7.2% over the same period last year. Thailand is currently Vietnam's largest export market in ASEAN, accounting for more than 20% of Vietnam's total export turnover to the bloc.
Vietnam exported 36 main items to this market in the first 8 months of 2024, of which 12 items had an export value of 100 million USD or more. The item with the largest export turnover was the group of machinery, equipment, tools, and other spare parts, reaching 666.7 million USD, up by 2.7%, accounting for 12.7% of the proportion; followed by the group of phones and components reaching 608 million USD, down by 13.6% over the same period last year, accounting for 11.6% of the proportion; followed by crude oil reaching 526 million USD, down by 1.1%, accounting for 10% of the export proportion.
Some export commodity groups to Thailand increased in the first 8 months of 2024 compared to the same period last year: chemical products increased by 265.4%; plastic products increased by 151.4%; vegetables and fruits increased by 89.4%; coffee increased by 88.9%; glass and glass products increased by 132.9%; petroleum increased by 51.2%; ores and minerals increased by 198.2%.
Exports to Indonesia in August and the first 8 months of 2024
According to statistics from the General Department of Customs, Vietnam's export of goods to the Indonesian market in August 2024 reached 683.7 million USD, an increase of 41.03% over the previous month. In the first 8 months of 2024, it reached 4.1 billion USD, an increase of 23.6% over the same period last year.
Indonesia has become a key and extremely potential market in Asia in particular and the world in general. The consumption of goods and products by Indonesian people is very large, especially Halal products - a market with many opportunities to increase export turnover.
The items exported by Vietnam to Indonesia were rice, seafood, coffee, chemical products, raw plastics, footwear of all kinds, textile raw materials, leather shoes, iron and steel of all kinds, etc. The group of computers, electronic products and components is the leading group in terms of export turnover to the Indonesian market. Vietnamese goods are also gradually asserting their position in the Indonesian market with export turnover increasing over time.
In the first 8 months of 2024, rice led the export turnover to the Indonesian market, reaching 557.7 million USD, up by 54.4% over the same period last year, accounting for 13.4% of the export proportion. The next was machinery, equipment, tools and spare parts, reaching 321.5 million USD, up by 28.5%, accounting for 7.7% of the export proportion.
In the first 8 months of 2024, some items had export turnover growth compared to the same period last year: coffee increased by 92.2%; chemicals increased by 169.6%; rubber increased by 70%; tea increased by 100.9%; coal increased by 374.6%.
The two-way trade between Vietnam and Indonesia in 2023 reached 13.8 billion USD, down by 2.5% compared to 2022. Of which, the imports from Indonesia reached 8.73 billion USD, and the exports to this market reached 5.07 billion USD. Thus, the trade deficit with Indonesia in 2023 reached 3.66 billion USD last year, down by 28.3%.
Exports of goods to Malaysia in August and the first 8 months of 2024
Malaysia is currently one of the import markets with great potential for Vietnam in the ASEAN region. Malaysia is Vietnam's 2nd largest trading partner in ASEAN and 9th in the world.
According to statistics from the General Department of Customs, the export turnover of goods to the Malaysian market in August 2024 reached 434.7 million USD, up by 1.1% over the previous month. In the first 8 months of the year the figure reached over 3.48 billion USD, up by 4.2% over the same period last year.
Vietnam's main export products to the Malaysian market include machinery, equipment and spare parts; computers; electronics and components; iron and steel of all kinds; petroleum, chemicals.
Leading the group of export items in the first 8 months of 2024 were the following groups of items: computers, electronic products and components reached 406.3 million, down by 4.07%; followed by iron and steel of all kinds reaching 395.9 million USD, up by 1.1%, accounting for 11.3% of the proportion; followed by rice reaching 345.9 million USD, up by 152.9%, accounting for 9.9%.
Some items with export growth in the first 8 months of 2024 compared to the same period last year: chemicals increased by 140.6%; coffee increased by 118%; plastic products increased by 54.5%; rubber increased by 194.3%; ores and minerals increased by 42.8%.
