Opportunities for cross-border e-commerce sustainable development

 Sunday, September 1,2024

AsemconnectVietnam - E-commerce can help digital economic goals go further, which is online export. Online export not only helps businesses increase market reach but also contributes to bringing Vietnamese brands to consumers in many markets around the world.

Great opportunities for exporting goods
According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Minh Tuan, Director of the Department of Digital Economy and Digital Society (under the Ministry of Information and Communications) said that cross-border e-commerce has great development opportunities, especially when Vietnam is close to a very large market such as China. Moreover, currently, Vietnamese digital technology enterprises have built B2B e-commerce platforms, connecting with the world's major e-commerce platforms such as Amazon, Alibaba, Timo, etc. so that when goods are listed on Vietnam's e-commerce platforms, they also appear on the world's major e-commerce platforms, connecting buyers directly with sellers as well as manufacturers.
Cross-border e-commerce is opening up great opportunities for businesses to promote the export of goods. However, to effectively utilize this export channel, many solutions are needed, from policy mechanisms to adapting to market requirements. Economic expert Dr. Vo Tri Thanh also said that the export of goods and services, including Vietnamese e-commerce, is still fundamentally influenced by foreign brands and distribution channels. Similar to import and export in general, Mr. Vo Tri Thanh said that businesses must strive to build Vietnamese brands and have a platform to connect with larger, more international platforms. Another aspect is that Vietnam currently has about 5,000 - 6,000 OCOP products, but the number of products that can be exported with 5 stars is very small. Therefore, to export online, it is necessary to ensure quality, traceability, scale, and goods that meet the trend of green and safe consumption. In particular, "Goods must be associated with Vietnamese stories, which are Vietnamese people, Vietnamese culture, Vietnamese traditions, and Vietnamese ways of doing things," Mr. Vo Tri Thanh stated, adding that at international conferences, there has been more discussion about digital trade and economics. In particular, there has been more mention of stories about large, large-scale items. Therefore, in addition to perfecting what is being done, it is necessary to do better to catch up with the development trend of the market, and at the same time, prepare for the stronger development trend of global e-commerce activities.
Mr. Tran Tuan Anh, CEO of Shopee Vietnam, said that through market surveys, there are a number of challenges for Vietnamese businesses. First, businesses must understand e-commerce and how to approach e-commerce through channels. Besides, businesses must understand how consumers will change to catch up and follow the trend.
“Our approach is to work closely with ministries and sectors to connect with businesses, associations, and production facilities from large to small. Thereby, we can effectively guide and update business methods, marketing, and operating tools... At the same time, we can create connections with supply chains, manufacturers, distributors, warehouses, etc.,” Mr. Tran Tuan Anh shared.
