Thailand was Vietnam's largest import market in ASEAN

According to General Department of Customs, in the first half of 2024, Vietnam - ASEAN trade reached 40 billion USD, up 11.9% over the same period last year.
In terms of exports, Vietnam’s export goods to ASEAN reached 17.9 billion USD, up 11.4% over the same period last year. Thailand continued to hold the top position with 3.87 billion USD. The following were Indonesia with 2.97 billion USD; Philippines with 2.92 billion USD; Malaysia with 2.61 billion USD. In a group with a turnover of over 2 billion USD, Vietnam’s export goods to Cambodia with 2.56 billion USD, to Singapore with 2.49 billion USD.
Laos, Myanmar and Brunei are three markets with the lowest export turnover in the bloc with 289 million USD, 149 million USD and 59 million USD respectively.
Among ASEAN markets, export turnover of goods to Brunei increased by 499% compared to the same period last year, from 10 million USD in the same period last year to 59 million USD. The followings are Singapore with an increase of 25% compared to the same period last year; Indonesia with an increase of 19% compared to the same period last year; the Philippines with an increase of 17% compared to the same period last year.
Export turnover of goods to Thailand also increased by 8% compared to the same period last year, to Laos increased by 7% compared to the same period last year, to Malaysia increased by 5.8% compared to the same period last year and Cambodia increased slightly by 0.09% compared to the same period last year.
Myanmar is the only market with a decrease in export turnover, down 40.6% compared to the same period last year. Regarding imports, in the first half of 2024, Vietnam spent 22.5 billion USD to import goods from the Thai market, up 12.4% over the same period last year. Thailand is the largest import market with 5.5 billion USD, followed by Indonesia with 4.78 billion USD, Malaysia with 4.72 billion USD. Total import turnover from these three markets reached 15 billion USD.
Cambodia is the fourth largest import market with 2.69 billion USD; followed by Singapore with 2.48 billion USD, the Philippines with 1.27 billion USD.
In agroup under 1 billion USD, Vietnam spent 638 million USD to import goods from Laos, imported from Brunei with 261 million USD and Myanmar with 156 million USD.
Among 9 ASEAN markets, Brunei is the market with the highest growth rate, increasing by 283% compared to the same period last year, from 68 million USD in the first half of 2023 to 261 million USD in the first half of 2024. Malaysia is the second largest market with an increase of 31% compared to the same period last year, followed by Cambodia with an increase of 29% compared to the same period last year, Myanmar and the Philippines with an increase of 19% compared to the same period last year.
Import turnover of goods from Indonesia and Laos both increased by 12% compared to the same period last year. In contrast, value of imported goods from Thailand decreased by 4% compared to the same period last year and from Singapore decreased by 0.9% compared to the same period last year.
