Vietnam rice market update mid-June 2024

AsemconnectVietnam - Vietnam exported nearly 4.2 million tons of rice in the first five months of 2024, worth approximately $2.7 billion, a year-on-year rise of nearly 15% in volume and over 38% in value, figures from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development showed.

The average export price reached $653.9 per ton, up 23.6% year-on-year. According to the Vietnam Food Association (VFA), the strong growth of the country's rice of Vietnam was attributed to increasing demand for food in world markets, after India, the world’s largest rice exporter, banned the export of non-basmati white rice to curb its inflation rate. Key markets like the Philippines, Indonesia, China and Ghana have increased rice imports from Vietnam.
Hai Duong promoting model of organic rice and sand worm
Tu Ky district in the northern province of Hai Duong recently held a festival to introduce and honor the value of local organic rice being grown in sand worm fields. This is another effort to enhance the value of these products, expand their market, and promote the potential for eco-tourism development in the province.
Tu Ky’s approach to organic agriculture was praised by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
The ministry urged the district to maintain the production model, and at the same time, pay more attention to spreading the benefits of the farming for human health model.
Hai Duong province has developed eight key agricultural product groups, with over 300 high-quality OCOP products. The organic rice production area combined with sand worm in the province covers nearly 1,000 hectares, mostly in Tu Ky, Thanh Ha, Kim Thanh districts, and Kinh Mon town.
In 2023, the province produced some 4,400 tons of organic rice, and 814 tons of sand worms, pocketing about 12 million USD.
Nearly 590 tonnes of rice allocated to Ninh Thuan province in between-crop period
Nearly 590 tonnes of rice from the national reserve has been allocated to the south-central province of Ninh Thuan to support local people during the between-crop period in 2024.
Under Prime Minister’s Decision No 465/QD-TTg, 9,518 households in five districts, namely Bac Ai, Ninh Son, Ninh Phuoc, Thuan Bac and Thuan Nam, will get rice assistance. The beneficiaries are poor, near-poor households and those in extremely difficult circumstances. Bach Van Nguyen, Deputy Director of the provincial Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, said that localities have provided support for the needy in a timely manner and in line with regulations.
According to the provincial People's Committee, the prolonged drought has been directly affecting agricultural production, people's lives and left negative impact on local socio-economic development.
Dong Thap launches exemplary model of high-quality low-emission rice production
A ceremony was held in My Dong commune in Thap Muoi district of Dong Thap province on June 12 to kick start a project to develop 1 million hectares of high-quality low-emission rice associated with green growth in the Mekong Delta Region. On this occasion, the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and its agencies launched the exemplary model of rice production in Dong Thap province. Director of the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Van Vu Minh said that Dong Thap is among five localities in the Mekong Delta Region that the agriculture ministry has chosen to develop exemplary models for the project on 1 million hectare of high-quality and low-emission rice production. The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) is interested in a project to develop one million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice associated with green growth in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta, Director General Yvonne Pinto told Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Tran Thanh Nam at their meeting in Can Tho city on June 6.
At the discussion, Nam stated that the project's main purpose is to both develop high-quality, low-emission rice cultivation and restructure production to increase production value and protect the environment. He proposed the IRRI assist Vietnam in developing standards for high-quality, low-emission rice and in building a low-emission rice brand for the international market.
Hoang Su Phi grows exceptionally high-quality rice
With a large area of terraced fields, Hoang Su Phi has many potentials and advantages in developing high-quality specialty rice. Developing high quality rice has been identified by Hoang Su Phi as one of the typical agricultural products. The district is focusing on expanding the model of growing local sticky rice and old rice associated with farming carp in communes with suitable climate and soil conditions such as Ban Luoc, Ngam Dang Vai, Ta Su Choong, San Lemongrass Lake, Po Ly Ngai... Up to now, the whole district maintains the model of growing sticky rice with an area of 75 hectares, the average yield is over 42 tons/ha, output is 315 tons; 46 hectares of mature rice, average yield reaches 55 tons/ha.
The district has connected with businesses and cooperatives to sign contracts to purchase all products along the high-quality rice value chain for households.
