An intense heatwave is sweeping through Southeast Asia, and maximum temperatures in parts of northern and central Vietnam have ranged from 40-44 degrees Celsius.
Kanica Goel, Senior Analyst at business intelligence specialist The Smart Cube, says extreme weather in Brazil and Vietnam is to blame. The two countries together account for 55% and 50% of global coffee production and exports respectively. Goel points out that in March, Brazil's Minas Gerais region – which accounts for 30% of the country’s arabica crop – received 235% more rain than i average for the time of year.
Vietnam's coffee exports in the first four months of 2024 were at 737,797 tonnes, up 2.8% from last year, customs data showed. Vietnam exported 152,073 tonnes of coffee in April, a decrease of 19.5% from the previous month. With 652,000 tonnes of coffee exported to the EU worth 1.66 billion USD in 2023, Vietnam was the second biggest coffee supplier of the EU in terms of volume and third largest supplier in terms of value.
Even though the EU's coffee import in 2023 dropped by 9% in volume and 10.2% in value from 2022, Vietnamese coffee exports to this market decreased only slightly, by 1.4% in volume and 0.02% in value. Therefore, Vietnam's share in the EU’s total coffee imports increased from 14.85% in 2022 to 16.08% in 2023.
