Dien Bien Phu Victory celebrated in HCM City
Saturday, May 4,2024AsemconnectVietnam - The Ho Chi Minh City Union of Friendship Organisations (HUFO) and its members on May 3 held a ceremony to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu Victory (May 7, 1954 - 2024). and pay tribute to foreign supporters.
At the event, participants reviewed the heroic traditions of Vietnamese army and people in the resistance war against the French colonialists, especially the Dien Bien Phu Victory that “resounded across the five continents and shook the globe”. They also expressed their deep gratitude to President Ho Chi Minh, General Vo Nguyen Giap and the soldiers who made the Dien Bien Phu Victory 70 years ago.
Notably, veterans who joined the Dien Bien Phu campaign shared memories of the campaign with young people in attendance. Vice Chairman of the HUFO Ho Xuan Lam said that the victory made an important contribution to awakening and encouraging oppressed peoples to rise up and fight for independence. It also led to the dissolution of the colonial system of imperialism globally.
Lam said that the Vietnamese people will never forget valuable international support that contributed to the victory. On this occasion, the HUFO presented flowers to and thanked Lao Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City Phonesy Bounmixay, Deputy Consul General of the People's Republic of China in Ho Chi Minh City Xuzhou. They also shared gifts with the representative of the Russian Consulate in the city for the support to Vietnam during its struggles for national independence, particularly the historic Dien Bien Phu campaign.
On March 13, 1954, the Vietnamese revolutionary army launched the first attack against the French colonialists’ heavily fortified base of Dien Bien Phu, starting a 56-day historic campaign whose victory directly led to the signing of the Geneva Accords on ending the war and restoring peace in Indochina.
President Ho Chi Minh affirmed that the Dien Bien Phu Victory was a brilliant golden milestone in history that directly led to the signing of the Geneva Accords. It also created a foundation and conditions for the Vietnamese people to secure victory in the resistance war against the US, liberate the South, and reunify the country in 1975.
Seventy years have passed, but the victory remains a source of pride of the Vietnamese people due to its global significance./.
