DAILY: Vietnamese pepper prices fell by 500 VND on March 19, 2024
Tuesday, March 19,2024AsemconnectVietnam - On Tuesday, domestic pepper prices in Vietnam's Central Highlands decreased by 500 VND to VND93,000 - VND95,000 per kg compared to Yesterday, according to Kinhtedothi.
The maximum price for pepper stayed at VND95,000 per kg in Dac Lac and Dak Nong while in Gia Lai province, the lowest price at VND93,000 per kg. Farmers in Dong Nai sold pepper for VND93,000 per kilogram, in Binh Phuoc province for VND95,000 per kilogram and Ba Ria – Vung Tau for 95,000 VND.
The Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA) predicts that Vietnam’s pepper production in 2024 will decrease by approximately 10-15 per cent, reaching 160,000-170,000 tonnes.
At the end of the most recent trading session, the International Pepper Community (IPC) listed Lampung (Indonesia) black pepper price at 4,302 USD/ton, an increase of 3.09%; Brazilian ASTA 570 black pepper price was at 4,375 USD/ton, down 0.57%; Kuching (Malaysia) ASTA black pepper price remained at 4,900 USD/ton.
Muntok white pepper price was 6,259 USD/ton, up 1.41%; Malaysian ASTA white pepper price is still at 7,300 USD/ton.
Vietnam’s 500 g/l black pepper price is traded at 4,100 USD/tonne, Vietnam’s 550 g/l black pepper price at 4,200 USD/tonne and White pepper price at 5,900 USD/tonne. The International Pepper Community said pepper prices increased sharply in Indonesia, but decreased in the Brazilian market.
According to some businesses and experts in the pepper industry, in recent years, pepper prices in many countries such as Brazil and Indonesia are often higher than Vietnam, and there was even a time when Indonesia had no pepper to export.
From 2014 to 2022, Brazil's pepper cultivation area shows an increasing trend. The pepper cultivation area in 2023 increases by 20,000 hectares compared to 2014. The pepper area in 2022, 2023, 2024 remains unchanged at 40,000 hectares. Brazilian pepper production recorded an increase of 141% over the past 10 years and reached 94,000 tons in 2023. However, Brazilian pepper production in 2023 recorded a decrease of 18% compared to the previous year due to the El Nino effect leading to hot and dry weather extremes. In 2024, Brazilian pepper output is expected to increase by 20% to 113,000 tons compared to 2023.
As the second largest pepper producing country in the world after Vietnam, Brazil maintains an average export of about 66,000 tons annually in the period from 2014 to 2023. As of January 2024, Brazilian pepper exports reached 6,037 tons, down 5% over the same period in 2023.
FOB Brazilian black pepper prices have fluctuated over the past 3 years. As of January 2024, the average export price of Brazilian white pepper reached 3,455 USD/ton, an increase of 27% over the same period in 2023.
