In the first half of February 2024, Vietnam exported nearly 57,000 tonnes of coffee, valued at 184.4 million USD. Overall, from the beginning of the year to February 15, the amount of coffee exported reached nearly 295,000 tonnes, valued at 911 million USD.
Compared to the same period last year, the amount of coffee exported increased by only 16.7% but the turnover increased by 66.8%. Accordingly, the average export coffee price reached nearly 3,100 USD/tonne, up nearly 43% over the same period last year.
Currently, coffee prices in the domestic market have reached a historic peak in the past 30 years, exceeding the mark of 83,000 VND/kg, up 70% over the same period last year. With this situation in 2024, experts forecast that coffee exports could reach 4.5 - 5 billion USD.
Vietnam’s pepper production is set to fall by 10-15% this year to 160,000-165,000 tonnes, according to the Vietnam Pepper Association. Coffee production is expected to fall by 10% this year as farmers shift to other crops like durian and fruits due to climate change, the Vietnam Coffee-Cocoa Association said. The association said coffee and pepper prices might rise further in June since major economies are likely to cut interest rates then and coffee roasters usually buy more around that time of the year.
Vietnam is the world's second largest coffee exporter after only Brazil. Dak Lak Province accounts for over 30% of its coffee production.Buon Me Thuot, its capital, is a well-known coffee label.
Vietnam is also the world's largest pepper producer with a 40% share of global output. It supplies a variety of pepper products, such as black, green, white, ground, and vinegar-soaked peppers.
