Rice export to markets in 2023

AsemconnectVietnam - In 2023, the country exported nearly 8.13 million tonnes of rice, equivalent to nearly 4.68 billion USD, an increase of 14.4% in quantity and 35.4% in turnover comparing to 2022.

According to preliminary statistics of General Department of Customs, in December 2023 the whole country exported 492,387 tonnes of rice, equivalent to 338.67 million USD, an average price 687.8 USD/tonne, down 18% in quantity, 15% and 4% in turnover but up 3.2% in price comparing to November 2023; Comparing to December 2022, it increased by 13.3% in quantity, 53.8% in turnover and 35.7% in price.
In December 2023, rice exports to the main market of the Philippines continued to increase by 6.4% in quantity, 7.8% in turnover and 1.3% in price comparing to November 2023, reached 260,692 tonnes, equivalent to 179.67 million USD with an average price of 689.2 USD/ton; Comparing to December 2022, it increased by 20.6% in quantity, 74.4% in turnover and 44.6% in price. Rice exports to Indonesian market in December 2023 decreased sharply by 61.2% in quantity, 63.3% in turnover and 5.4% in price comparing to November 2023, reached 42,467 tonnes, equivalent to 25,58 million USD; Comparing to December 2022, it also decreased by 16.2% in quantity but increased by 3.2% in turnover and 23% in price.
Notably, rice exports to Chinese market in December 2023 increased strongly by over 85% in both volume and turnover comparing to November 2023, reaching 21,630 tonnes with a turnover of 12.99 million USD; Comparing to December 2022, there is a very sharp decrease of 49.7% in quantity and a decrease of 45.5% in turnover.
For the whole year of 2023, the country's rice export quantity reached over 8.13 million tonnes, equivalent to nearly 4.68 billion USD, an increase of 14.4% in quantity, 35.4% in turnover comparing to 2022. An average price reached 575 USD/tonne, an increase of 18.3%.
The Philippines still ranks first in Vietnam's rice consumption, accounting for 38.6% of the total quantity and 37.5% of the country's total rice export turnover, reached over 3.13 million tonnes, equivalent to over 1.75 billion USD, an average price 559.4 USD/tonne, down 2.5% in quantity but up 17.6% in turnover and up 20.6% in price compared to 2022.
The next is Indonesian market, accounting for over 14.3% of the total volume and 13.7% of the total turnover, reached over 1.17 million tonnes, equivalent to 640.25 million USD, average price of 549.2 USD/tonne, a sharp increase of 878% in quantity and 992% in turnover; Prices increased 11.7% compared to 2022.
Chinese market ranked third with 917,255 tonnes, equivalent to turnover of 530.61 million USD and an average price of 578.5 USD/tonne, up 7.8% in volume, up 22.7% in turnover and 13.9% in price. Comparing to 2022, accounting for nearly 11% of the country's total rice export quantity and turnover.
Exports to RCEP markets reached over 5.79 million tonnes, equivalent to 3.24 billion USD, up 21.5% in quantity and 43.2% in turnover. Exports to CPTTP markets reached 574,813 tonnes, equivalent to 317.78 million USD, down 0.7% in quantity, up 13.4% in turnover. Exports to the Southeast Asian market reached nearly 4.83 million tonnes, equivalent to 2.68 billion USD, up 24.6% in quantity and 48.4% in turnover.
According to Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the country's rice output in 2023 reached 43.5 million tonnes, an increase of 1.9%, due to an increase in area of 10,600 hectares (up 0.1%) and productivity of 61 tonne/ha, an increase of 1 tonne/ha (1.7%). The above output has met the needs of domestic consumption, processing, animal feed and rice export at a record high of nearly 8.3 million tonnes.
Thanks to that, rice export value reached a record of 4.78 billion USD, an increase of 38.4% compared to 2022. In 2024, with an area of 7.1 million hectares under cultivation, the agricultural sector will increase in productivity so that rice output reaches 43-43.5 million tonnes.
According to experts, supply remains low and demand for Vietnamese rice is predicted to be strong this year, especially from the Philippines and China.
Rice prices in India remain high despite export restrictions. Rice output of India has begun to slow down due to lower output. Indian government purchased 46.39 million tonnes of paddy in 2023, down from 53.4 million tonnes the previous year.
