Vietnam's coal imports increased sharply in volume in November

AsemconnectVietnam - Vietnam's coal imports reached more than 4.98 million tonnes, equivalent to more than 688 million USD in November of 2023, increasing sharply in volume and value over the same period last year.

According to the preliminary statistics figures of the General Department of Customs, Vietnam's coal imports reached more than 4.98 million tonnes, equivalent to more than 688 million USD in November of 2023, a sharp increase of 117.7% in volume and increased 60% in value compared to November of 2022.
Overall, in the first 11 months of the year, coal imports reached more than 46.3 million tonnes with a value of more than 6.54 billion USD, an increase of 58.6% in volume but a slight decrease of 1.8% in turnover compared to the same period last year. The average import price in 11 months recorded a sharp decrease, reaching 141.3 USD/tonne, down by 58.8% over the same period of 2022.
In terms of market, Australia was Vietnam's largest coal supplier in the first 11 months of the year with 18.2 million tonnes, worth of more than 3.02 billion USD, accounting for 39.2% of the proportion. Ranked second was Indonesia, providing Vietnam with more than 17.3 million tonnes of coal, equivalent to 1.89 billion USD, accounting for 37.3% of the proportion.
Russia was the third market. In November of 2023, coal imports from Russia reached more than 729,000 tonnes worth of 127.6 million USD, a sharp increase of 876% in volume and 676.8% in turnover compared to November of 2022.
Overall, in the first 11 months of the year, Vietnam spent about 789 million USD to import more than 4.08 million tonnes of coal from Russia, an increase of 97.2% in volume and an increase of 42% in value compared to the same period of 2022, accounting for 8.8% in volume and 12.04% in turnover. The average export price in 11 months of 2023 reached 193.2 USD/tonne, down by 28% compared to the same period of 2022.
Besides Russia, another market that also boosted coal exports to Vietnam in November was China (up by 878% in volume, up by 639% in turnover).
Also according to the General Department of Customs, Vietnam's coal imports are increasing rapidly, from 6.9 million tonnes in 2015 to a "peak" of over 54 million tonnes in 2020. In the 11 months of 2023 alone, the imports of coal have exceeded 46 million tonnes.
