Vietnam cashew nut market update: exports up 14.3% in value

 Wednesday, November 1,2023

AsemconnectVietnam - Vietnam’s cashew nut exports posted double-digit growth year-on-year in the first nine months of 2023, with 456,000 tonnes sold abroad for 2.6 billion USD, increases of 19.6 percent and 14.3 percent year-on-year, respectively.

Export volume increased significantly faster than turnover because the average export price of cashew nuts decreased. According to the Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade), in the first 8 months of 2023, Vietnam's average cashew export price reached $ 5,760/tonne, down 3.6% compared to the same period in 2022.
There are many reasons why the average export price of cashew nuts has decreased, including quality issues. According to Mr. Pham Van Cong, Chairman of the Vietnam Cashew Association (Vinacas), due to the decline in food safety and hygiene of Vietnamese cashew nuts, the price of Vietnamese cashew nuts is currently lower than the price of Indian cashew nuts.
The United States remained the largest market for Vietnamese cashew nuts in the first seven months of 2023. However, the growth in this market was stagnated compared to the same period in 2022, with exports reaching 88.9 thousand tons in volume and 512 million USD in value. This is an increase of 0.8% in volume and 0.3% in value compared to the same period in 2022. However, by August 2023, Vietnam's cashew exports to the United States had rebounded remarkably, with an increase of 45.1% in volume and 33.8% in value. As a result, the cashew nut export volume in the first eight months rose to 104 thousand tons, which is valued at 592 million USD. This is an increase of 5.4% in volume and 3.8% in value compared to the same period in 2022.
According to the association, the demand for cashew nuts in the last three months of the year will increase in all markets, especially the US and the EU, to meet holiday and festive season demand, driving further growth in Vietnam’s exports of the product.

Cashew industry moves to boost green production, consumption
Although the cashew nut processing and exporting industry was warned of many difficulties in 2023, Vietnamese exporters still have many opportunities to boost exports if both businesses and farmers turn to green production, insiders have said.
Marc Rosenblatt, a representative of The Richard Franco Agency of the US, said that American and European consumers have paid great attention to food safety, hygiene and production environment safety when deciding to choose a product.
Consumers in these markets also like to use cashew nuts because of their nutritional content, he added.
Cashew nuts are increasingly accounting for a high proportion in the consumption structure of nuts of global consumers. Therefore, clean cashew nuts will always be a priority for young people in Europe and Asia.
Experts said global consumers are increasingly interested in green production and consumption, especially in the context that the world economy is falling into recession, and consumers are tightening their spending. Consumers prioritise choosing products that protect the living and production environment.
Exported cashew nuts are subject to quality warnings
The quality of Vietnam's exported cashew nuts is decreasing - a warning from associations and major customers from 2 important markets: Europe and the US.
Information from Vinacas shows that, in recent times, there have been complaints and warnings from some customers and markets about the quality of many Vietnamese cashew nut shipments. Specifically, two nut and food industry associations in Europe and the US and a number of large customers have issued written warnings about the decline in the quality of Vietnamese cashew nuts. In particular, the indicators that are often warned about are worms (insects) living in cashew nuts, pesticide residues, and strange impurities...
Mr Bach Khanh Nhut, Vice President of Vinacas, said that the last months of the year are a time of heavy rain, making cashew nuts susceptible to mould and insects. This is the time when factories increase production to promptly meet rising import demand at the end of the year. Therefore, food safety control in cashew processing may no longer be as strict as before. Even the requirement to ensure a quarantine period after using disinfectant drugs is not complied with by many factories because of delivery pressure, leading to chemical residues on exported products.
The Vietnam Cashew Association (Vinacas) has advised firms to pay attention to ensuring quality and food safety to avoid unnecessary export-related risks given growing overseas shipments of cashew nuts, which are forecast to soar in the final months of the year.
Talking to the press in Ho Chi Minh City on October 10, Vinacas Chairman Pham Van Cong said the exports faced many difficulties in the first half due to the impact of inflation, economic recession, and conflicts between countries. However, from the third quarter onwards, the market has been picking up, with the two major ones – the US and China – increasing their imports contributing to the growth in both export volume and value.
