Tea exports still lack positive signals in last months of 2023
Thursday, October 19,2023AsemconnectVietnam - The prospect of tea export in the last months of 2023 does not show positive signs, when tea consumption demand in many countries is limited due to the pressure of inflation.
According to the statistics figures from the General Department of Customs, in the first 9 months of 2023, Vietnam's tea exports reached 82,000 tonnes, worth of 140.8 million USD, down by 14.2% in volume and 15.9% in value compared to the same period of 2022.
The average export price of tea reached 1,717.3 USD/tonne, down by 2% over the same period of 2022.
In September of 2023 alone, tea exports reached 11,100 tonnes, worth of 18.9 million USD, down by 16.2% in volume and 11% in value compared to September of 2022. The average export price of tea in September of 2023 reached 1,711.1 USD/tonne, up by 6.2% compared to September of 2022.
Tea exports to major markets all decreased significantly in the first 9 months of 2023. In particular, the main export market of the tea industry, Pakistan, is still facing inflation and high interest rates, along with the shortage of foreign currency, causing importers to limit tea purchases. Therefore, tea exports to the Pakistani market continued to trend downward.
In the first 9 months of 2023, tea exports to this market reached 33,400 tonnes, worth of 64.5 million USD, down by 12.3% in volume and down by 10% in value compared to the same period of 2022.
The next was the exports to the Taiwan market (China) reaching 10,700 tonnes, worth of 17.9 million USD, down by 8.3% in volume and down by 10.2% in value; to Russia reached 5,000 tonnes, worth of 8.4 million USD, down by 32.6% in volume and 35.2% in value.
Among the main export markets in the first 9 months of 2023, Iraq and Saudi Arabia were two markets recording double-digit export growth. Accordingly, the exports to Iraqi market increased by 48.8% in volume and 32.9% in value; Meanwhile, the exports to Saudi Arabian market increased by 12.2% in volume but decreased by 3.3% in value compared to the same period last year.
Industry experts say that the prospect of tea export in the last months of 2023 does not show positive signs, when tea consumption demand in countries is limited due to the pressure of inflation.
In addition, tea businesses also face difficulties as regulations on technical barriers become increasingly strict, causing Vietnamese tea businesses to not be able to meet and take advantage of opportunities from FTAs that Vietnam has signed.
