Rice exports soared nearly 90%

 Tuesday, October 10,2023

AsemconnectVietnam - According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, in September of this year, Vietnam’s rice exports increased by 80%, estimated at 495 million USD.

The total rice exports in the first nine months of this year reached 3.66 billion USD, up by 40.4% over the same period last year and exceeding the export turnover of the whole year of 2022 (3.45 billion USD).
It is worth noting that the export value of 3.66 billion USD achieved in the first 9 months of 2023 with the volume of rice exported being only 6.6 million tonnes while in 2011, to achieve 3.65 billion USD, 7.1 million tonnes of rice were needed.
This is thanks to the average export price of rice from the beginning of the year until now being always high, reaching 553 USD/tonne, up by 14% over the same period last year. There was even a time when the price of Vietnamese rice exports reached nearly 650 USD/tonne.
Regarding the export markets, in the first 8 months of this year, the Philippines still ranked first in Vietnam's rice consumption, accounting for 40.3% of total rice exports. It was followed by China, accounting for 13.5%; Indonesia ranked third, accounting for 12.4%. In addition, the exports of rice to EU markets such as Poland, Netherlands, Spain, Belgium, and some African markets such as Ghana, Angola, etc. also recorded positive growth.
Recently, export rice prices have tended to stagnate following moves by some importing countries to curb inflation, focusing on policies to develop domestic production to increase reserves, inventory and find new alternative food sources for rice.
But Vietnam's rice export price still ranks first in the world. According to the Vietnam Food Association, on October 4, Vietnam's rice prices of all kinds remained stable, but the rice price of Thailand and Pakistan had a slight decrease.
Specifically, Vietnam's 5% broken rice price reached 613 USD/tonne, while Thailand's was 586 USD/tonne (down by 4 USD/tonne), and Pakistan's was 558 USD/tonne (down by 30 USD/tonne).
Vietnam's 25% broken rice was at 598 USD/tonne, Thailand's was 538 USD/tonne (down by 3 USD/tonne) and Pakistan's was 498 USD/tonne (down by 20 USD/tonne).
To promote the exports of this product, in implementing the National Program on Trade Promotion, the Department of Trade Promotion coordinated with the Import-Export Department - Ministry of Industry and Trade to organize a trade delegation for introduction of rice products in China.
The goal of the program is to directly introduce Vietnam's export rice brands and products to importers and consumers in the Chinese market; create opportunities for direct contact for businesses on both sides to sign business cooperation agreements. The promotion of rice exports will be done through activities such as organizing B2B seminars on rice trade between Vietnamese exporters and importers in China; working at a number of factory, warehouse, transportation systems and some large rice importing enterprises in China; as well as learning about the system and methods of distribution, retail and consumption of Chinese consumers, thereby building a direct penetration method and increasing market share in the above market.
The trade delegation will also work with your management agency and relevant business associations to learn about policy directions, consumer needs, tastes, and regulations on rice import and export, from That helps Vietnamese businesses capture information, proactively plan work, and meet market requirements.
It is expected that the trade delegation will have a scale of 10 - 18 businesses, promoting trade in China from October 30 to November 5, 2023 in Beijing and Guangzhou (Guangdong province).
According to the US Department of Agriculture, this year the Philippines will join China as the two largest rice importers in the world with an output of about 3.5 million tonnes. China is also currently Vietnam's second largest rice import market.
