Tuesday, August 22,2023AsemconnectVietnam - According to the preliminary statistics figures of the General Department of Customs, in the first 7 months of 2023, Vietnam's corn and soybean imports decreased, while wheat imports increased compared to the same period last year.
Specifically, the import of corn of all kinds in the first seven months of 2023 reached nearly 4.28 million tonnes, worth of over 1.4 billion USD while the whole country imported nearly 1.21 million tonnes of soybeans, worth of nearly 780.1 million USD.
Also in the first 7 months of 2023, the country's imported wheat volume reached over 2.81 million tonnes, equivalent to over 1 million USD.
Vietnam’s corn imports in July and the first 7 months of 2023
The imports of corn of all kinds in the first seven months of 2023 reached nearly 4.28 million tonnes, valued at over 1.4 billion USD, the average price was 328 USD/tonne, down by 16.8 % in volume, down by 23.4% in turnover and by 7.9% in price compared to 7 months of 2022, showed the preliminary statistics figures of the General Department of Customs.
In July of 2023 alone, the country’s imports of corn reached 597,439 tonmes, equivalent to 176.91 million USD, the average price was 296.1 USD/tonne, up by 18.2% in volume and up by 13.9% in turnover compared to June of 2023, but the price fell by 3.6%. In comparison with July of 2022, the country’s imports of corn increased slightly by 0.6% in volume, but decreased by 21.5% in turnover and decreased by 22% in price.
Leading corn import markets in the first 7 months of 2023
Brazil was the main market supplying corn to Vietnam in the first seven months of 2023, accounting for 32.3% of the total volume and 32.8% of the total corn import turnover of the country, reaching 1.38 million tonnes, equivalent to nearly 459.87 million USD, priced at 333.4 USD/tonne, a sharp increase of 257.2 % in volume, 259.9% increase in turnover and 0.8% increase in price compared to 7 months of 2022.
The second largest market was Argentina, with 1.38 million tonnes in the 7 months of 2023, equivalent to 451.67 million USD, priced at 326.4 USD/tonne, accounting for 32.4% of the total volume and accounting for 32.2% of the total corn import turnover of the country, down by 56.6% in volume, down by 60.8% in turnover and 9.8% in price compared to the first seven months of 2022.
The next was the Indian market. In the first 7 months of 2023, the country’s imports of corn from India reached 1.13 million tonnes, equivalent to 349.78 million USD, priced at 310.4 USD/tonne, accounting for 26.3% of the total volume and 24.9% of the total corn import turnover of the whole country, increased by 77.2% in volume, increased by 68.3% in turnover, but the price decreased by 5% over the same period last year.
Vietnam’s soybean imports in July and the first 7 months of 2023
In the first seven months of 2023, the whole country imported nearly 1.21 million tonnes of soybeans, worth of nearly 780.1 million USD, with an average price of 645.5 USD/tonne.
According to the preliminary statistics figures of the General Department of Customs, Vietnam’s soybean imports in July of 2023 reached 90,375 tonnes, equivalent to 51.97 million USD, the average price was 575 USD/tonne, down by 62.4% in volume and down by 62.9% turnover compared to June of 2023, the price decreased by 1.4%. In comparison to July of 2022, there was also a sharp decrease in both volume, turnover and price, with a corresponding decrease of 54.5%, 65.3% and 23.8%.
In the first 7 months of 2023, the whole country imported nearly 1.21 million tonnes of soybean, worth of nearly 780.1 million USD, the average price was 645.5 USD/tonne, down by 1.7% in volume, down by 8.7 % turnover and 7% decrease in price compared to 7 months of 2022.
Leading soybean import markets in July and the first 7 months of 2023
Soybean imports from the Brazilian market in July of 2023 fell sharply by nearly 59.6% in volume and 60.7% in turnover compared to June of 2023, the price decreased slightly by 2.8%, reaching 70,969 tonnes, equivalent to 38.87 million USD, priced at 547.7 USD/tonne. Generally, in the first 7 months of 2023, soybean imports from this market reached 592,526 tonnes, equivalent to 358.21 million USD, accounting for 49% of the total volume and accounting for 45.9% of the total soybean import turnover of the whole country, down by 23.9% in volume, down by 34.7% in turnover, and the price was down by 14% over the same period last year.
Soybean imports from the US market - the second largest market in the first 7 months of 2023 reached 481,932 tonnes, equivalent to 329.89 million USD, priced at 684.5 USD/tonne, accounting for 39.9% of the total volume and accounting for 42 .3% of the country's total soybean import turnover, up by 25.7% in volume, 28.4% in turnover and 2.1% in price over the same period last year.
In addition, soybean imports from the Canadian market in the first seven months of 2023 reached 69,313 tonnes, equivalent to over 51.35 million USD, priced at 740.9 USD per tonne, up by 15.9% in volume, up by 19.7% in turnover and the price increased by 3.4% over the same period last year. The imports from Cambodia market reached 363 tonnes, equivalent to 283,550 USD, priced at 781 USD/tonne, down by 94% in both volume and value but up by 3.7% in price.

In the first 7 months of 2023, the whole country's wheat imports reached over 2.81 million tonnes, equivalent to over 1 million USD, up by 8.7% in volume, up by 2.9% in turnover compared to 7 months of 2022.
According to the preliminary statistics figures of the General Department of Customs, in July 2023, the whole country imported 334,021 tonnes of wheat, equivalent to 111.13 million USD, the average price was 332.7 USD/tonne, down by 25.3% in volume and decreased by 26% in turnover compared to June of 2023 and the price decreased by 1%. In comparison to July of 2022, it also decreased by 2% in volume, decreased by 21% in turnover and decreased by 19.6% in price.
Generally, in the first seven months of 2023, the whole country's wheat imports reached over 2.81 million tonnes, equivalent to over 1 million USD, up by 8.7% in volume, up by 2.9% in turnover compared to the first 7 months of 2022, the average price reached 356.4 USD/tonne, down by 5.4%.

In July of 2023, Vietnam’s wheat imports from the main market Australia decreased by over 21% in both volume and value compared to June of 2023, the price also decreased by 0.3%, reaching 328,899 tonnes, equivalent to 109.03 million USD, the price was at 331.5 USD/tonne. In comparison with July of 2022, it increased by 8.7% in volume, but decreased by 12.3% in turnover and decreased by 19.4% in price. For the whole 7 months of 2023, wheat imports from the Australian market, accounting for 75.5% of the total volume and 73.5% of the total wheat import turnover of the whole country, reached nearly 2.13 million tonnes, equivalent to 737.04 million USD, the average price was 346.8 USD/tonne, up by 17.4% in volume, up by 7.2% in turnover but down by 8.7% in price compared to 7 months of 2022.
Behind Australia's main market was Brazil, accounting for nearly 9.3% of the total volume and 9.6% of the total turnover, reaching 261,611 tonnes, equivalent to 95.82 million USD, with an average price of 366.3 USD/tonne, down by 19% in volume, down by 14.9% in turnover but up by 5% in price compared to 7 months of 2022.
The imports from the US market reached 172,245 tonnes, equivalent to 70.51 million USD, priced at 409.4 USD/tonne, increased strongly by 35.5% in volume, increased by 21.5% in turnover but decreased by 10.4% in price compared to the same 7 months of 2022, accounting for 6% of the total volume and 7% of the total import turnover of wheat of the country.
Wheat imports from the Canadian market reached 165,986 tonnes, equivalent to 68.91 million USD, a sharp increase of 3,000% in volume and 2,603% in turnover compared to 7 months of 2022.
