Wheat imports increased slightly by nearly 5% in first 5 months of 2023

AsemconnectVietnam - In the first 5 months of 2023, Vietnam's imports of wheat reached over 2.03 million tonnes, equivalent to over 752.47 million USD, up by 4.8% in volume, up by 4.5% in turnover compared to same period last year.

According to the preliminary statistics figures of the General Department of Customs, in May of 2023, the whole country imported 378,811 tonnes of wheat, equivalent to 148.23 million USD, the average price was 391.3 USD/tonne, down by nearly 14.1% in terms of volume and decreased by 7.1% in turnover compared to April of 2023, but the price increased by 8.2%. In comparison to May of 2022, it decreased by 2.8% in volume, but increased by 0.5% in turnover and increased by 3.4% in price.
Generally in the first 5 months of 2023, the country's wheat imports reached over 2.03 million tonnes, equivalent to over 752.47 million USD, up by 4.8% in volume, up by 4.5% in turnover compared to the first 5 months of 2022. The average price reached 370 USD/tonne, a slight decrease of 0.3%.
In May of 2023, wheat imports from the main market Australia decreased by 10.1% in volume, but increased by 0.8% in turnover and increased by 12.2% in price compared to April of 2023, reaching 273,193 tonnes, equivalent to 107.11 million USD, the price was at 392 USD/tonne. In comparison with May of 2022, it decreased by 6.2% in volume, decreased by 2% in turnover but increased by 4.5% in price. For the whole first 5 months of 2023, the country’s wheat imports from the Australian market accounted for nearly 68.4% of the total volume and 67% of the total wheat import turnover of the country, reaching over 1.39 million tonnes, equivalent to 504.17 million USD, average price reached 362.3 USD/tonne, up by 12.4% in volume, up by 9.1% in turnover but down by 2.9% in price compared to the first 5 months of 2022.
Besides Australia, the Brazilian market accounted for nearly 13% of the total volume and turnover, reaching 261,611 tonnes, equivalent to 95.82 million USD, the average price reached 366.3 USD/tonne, down by 18.9% in volume, down by 14.9% in turnover but up by 5% in price compared to the first 5 months of 2022.
The next was the Canadian market with 155,971 tonnes, equivalent to 64.75 million USD, priced at 415.2 USD/tonne, a very strong increase of 3,480% in volume, up by 3,082% in turnover but down by 11% in price compared to the first 5 months of 2022, accounting for 7.7% of the total volume and 8.6% of the total wheat import turnover of the country.
Wheat imports from the US market reached 146,676 tonnes, equivalent to 60.91 million USD, up by 38% in volume and 27.6% in turnover compared to the first 5 months of 2022.
