Lychee
The first official-channel shipment of Vietnamese lychee imported by the UK’s TT Meridian Ltd has arrived in the UK.
Thai Tran, managing director of the company, said that it first imported early ripening lychee from Vietnam to compete with those from Mexico and China that are available in the UK market.
Notably, Vietnamese lychee is now packed with the image of the Vietnamese national flag on the package, which aims to promote Vietnamese brands and help consumers easily recognise Vietnamese products in supermarkets.
He informed that the whole process from harvesting the fruit at farms in Vietnam to selling it in the UK takes only 36 hours.
The demand for Vietnamese lychee in the UK is increasing thanks to its high quality and short season, cultural exchange activities, and trade promotion efforts, he said.
Durian, coconut
The export of durian and coconut is expected to hit 1 billion USD this year thanks to increasing demand from China, according to experts.
Since China opened its doors to fresh durian from Vietnam last September, as many as 293 planting areas and 115 packing units in Vietnam have received codes to export to Chinese market.
This is a very favorable condition for Vietnamese durian to enter China, experts said, adding that exports of the fruit are likely to hit 1 billion USD this year.
In the last three months of 2022, Vietnam shipped a total of 40,800 tons of durian to China, generating a revenue of 188 million USD.
Meanwhile, authorities in Vietnam and China are constructively negotiating for Vietnamese coconut to enter China, also via official channels.
According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Vietnam has about 188,000 ha of coconut with a production of 1.9 million tons last year. Coconut and coconut related products brought home over 900 USD last year.
Fruits, vegetables
The export of Vietnamese fruits and vegetables is expected to continue to soar, considering a growth of 39% since early this year and strong increases in China's purchases.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), fruits and vegetables brought home 600 million USD from exports in May, bringing the five-month figure to 1.97 billion USD, up 39% annually.
In the first four months of this year, China remained the top consumer of Vietnamese fruits and vegetables with a market share of 58.7%, reaching a value of 804.6 million USD, up 30% year-on-year. The Netherlands posted the highest growth, 72%, in the import value of Vietnamese fruits and vegetables.
Secretary General of the Vietnam Fruit & Vegetables Association Dang Phuc Nguyen said it is the first year following nearly three years of COVID-19 that China has actively increased its purchase of Vietnamese farm produce such as dragon fruit, durian, mango, and jackfruit, among others.
Lychee, longan
The Vietnamese Trade Office in Singapore is working to promote the export of Vietnamese fruits, particularly longan and lychee, to Singapore.
Accordingly, a series of activities, including the Vietnamese Goods Week programme, as well as business networking and lychee testing events, have taken place in the island nation.
Further support from the office is also available for any Vietnamese localities and enterprises with intention to export fresh lychee and longan to the market.
As per data from the Singaporean business administration, last year, the country spent 6.78 million SGD (5.02 million USD) and 4.6 million SGD on importing fresh lychee and longan, respectively. Of the sums, shipments of the two fruits from Vietnam were worth 43,000 SGD and 4,000 SGD.
Grape
The south-central province of Ninh Thuan has introduced new grape varieties and advanced farming techniques to improve farmers’ incomes.
The country’s largest grape producing province has more than 1,000ha under the fruit and an annual output of 26,000-28,000 tonnes, according to its Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.
It grows mostly two table varieties, Red Cardinal and NH 01-48, and the wine grape Syrah.
To add value, the province has developed models of growing high quality grape to Vietnamese and global good agricultural practices (VietGAP and GlobalGAP), and organic standards, and used advanced farming techniques in recent years.
