Tea exports earned only 50 million USD in 4 months of 2023
Wednesday, May 10,2023AsemconnectVietnam - In the first 4 months of 2023, Vietnam’s tea exports were estimated at 30,000 tonnes, worth of 50 million USD, down by 4.8% in volume and 5.8% in value over the same period of 2022.
The Import-Export Department (under the Ministry of Industry and Trade) quoted data from the General Department of Customs as saying that, in April of 2023, tea exports reached 9,000 tonnes, worth of 15 million USD, up by 16% in volume and up by 17% in value compared to March of 2023. The figure was up by 1% in volume and down by 9.6% in value compared to April of 2022.
Generally, in the first 4 months of 2023, Vietnam’s tea exports were estimated at 30,000 tonnes, worth of 50 million USD, down by 4.8% in volume and down by 5.8% in value over the same period of 2022.
The average export price of tea in April of 2023 reached 1,636.5 USD/tonne, down by 10.4% compared to April of 2022. As from the beginning of the year to the end of April of 2023, the average export price of tea reached 1,647 USD/tonne, down by 1% over the same period of 2022.
Tea was the most exported product to Asia in the first quarter of 2023, the proportion of exports to this region accounted for 83.3% of the total tea export value, up by 4 percentage points over the same period of 2022.
Tea export value to Asia reached 29.2 million USD, up by 1.7% compared to the first quarter of 2022. In particular, tea exports increased sharply to China, Saudi Arabia and India.
While the proportion of exports to Asia increased, the tea exports to Europe and America decreased in the first quarter of 2023.
The exports to Europe were mainly to the Russian market, so the sharp drop in export value to Russia has affected the export results to Europe.
The value of tea exports to Russia in the first quarter of 2023 reached 3.2 million USD, down by 16.9% compared to the first quarter of 2022.
Tea exports to the Americas fell sharply, mainly due to exports to the US market, while the export value to this market decreased sharply.
The export value to the Americas in the first quarter of 2023 reached 1.4 million USD, down by 51.9% compared to the first quarter of 2022, of which the value of exports to the United States accounted for 95.5%.
In the structure of export tea categories, green tea and black tea were the two main export categories with export value accounting for a high proportion in the first quarter of 2023. In which, the exports of green tea reached 8,600 tonnes, worth of 16.5 million USD, down by 9.5% in volume and down by 0.1% compared to the first quarter of 2022.
The average export price of green tea reached 1,920.4 USD per tonne, up by 10.4% compared to the first quarter of 2022. Green tea exports were mainly to Asia, with a value accounting for 96% of the total export value of green tea. It was followed by Europe, America and Oceania.
Black tea exports in the first quarter of 2023 reached 10,400 tonnes, worth of 14.3 million USD, down by 13.9% in volume and 16.3% in value compared to the first quarter of 2022. Black tea was exported the most to the Asian market, accounting for 72% of the total export value of black tea.
