Vietnam’s coffee exports to the EU surged in the first eight months of the year thanks to the EVFTA

 Wednesday, October 29,2025

AsemconnectVietnam - The EU–Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA), which took effect in August 2020, has provided a significant boost to Vietnam’s coffee exports to the EU. According to data from the General Department of Vietnam Customs, from an export value of only USD64 million in August 2020, Vietnam’s coffee exports to the EU increased 7.2 times, peaking at USD466 million in March 2025. However, shipments continuously fell month-on-month from April to August 2025 due to end-season limited supply and reliance on inventories while the new harvest had yet to arrive.

However, shipments continuously fell month-on-month from April to August 2025 due to end-season limited supply and reliance on inventories while the new harvest had yet to arrive. Calculations based on Vietnam Customs statistics show that in August 2025, Vietnam exported 33,700 tonnes of coffee to the EU, worth more than USD175.3 million — down 12.4% in volume and 13% in value compared to the previous month; yet still up 9.5% in volume and 7% in value over the same period last year. In total, during the first eight months of 2025, Vietnam’s coffee exports to the EU reached over 480.4 thousand tonnes, worth USD2,725.1 million — up 16.6% in volume but rising sharply by 74.26% in value year-on-year. The EU accounted for 38% of Vietnam’s total coffee export value in August 2025 and 42% in the eight-month period — higher than the 39% recorded a year earlier. This indicates that Vietnam’s export market share in the EU has further expanded thanks to the EVFTA.

Product structure of Vietnam’s coffee exports to the EU
By product segment, raw coffee beans still dominate Vietnam’s coffee exports. Although the share of processed coffee remains low, its strong year-on-year growth highlights Vietnam’s increasingly recognized position in the EU market.
Calculations from customs data show:
·         Unroasted, non-decaffeinated coffee:
USD140 million in August 2025 (-17% MoM, +27% YoY), accounting for 89% of total export value.
8M2025: USD2.434 billion (+80% YoY).
·         Coffee extracts/essences/concentrates:
USD21.9 million in August 2025 (-0.6% MoM, +21% YoY), 7% of the total.
8M2025: USD180.7 million (+57% YoY).
·         Decaffeinated coffee:
USD12.6 million in August 2025 (+31.2% MoM, +41% YoY), 4% of the total.
8M2025: USD105.8 million (+51% YoY).
Despite a month-on-month decline, the rate of decrease has narrowed. Exports of the two leading product categories continue to show strong year-on-year increases, demonstrating rising competitiveness of Vietnam’s high-quality coffee in this demanding market. Decaffeinated coffee exports surged sharply in August.
