Vietnam, the world's largest cashew exporter, retains only 7 percent of output for domestic consumption. Its exports account for half of the world's cashew trade.
Harvesting lasts between February and June.
Most of Vietnam's cashew is grown in the south where yield averages 1.06 tonnes per hectare. Around 460 domestic producers face short supplies and unstable quality as domestic output meets just one third of their processing capacity.
They imported more than 1 million tonnes of raw nuts in 2016, up 21.4 percent from the previous year, mainly from Africa.
Vietnam plans to produce 450,000 tonnes by 2020 from 350,000 hectares at present.
The United States, China and the Netherlands were the top buyers by value in January-October 2017.
