AsemconnectVietnam - Vietnam's total import and export turnover of goods in the first 10 months of 2026 is estimated to reach 1,010.6 billion USD, officially surpassing 1,000 billion USD mark.

Import and export turnover surpasses 1,000 billion USD mark.
According to information from Import-Export Department, Ministry of Industry and Trade, it is estimated that Vietnam's total import and export turnover of goods in the first 10 months of 2026 will reach 1,010.6 billion USD, an increase of 32.3% compared to the same period in 2025, officially surpassing 1,000 billion USD mark. In October alone, import and export turnover is estimated to reach 122.2 billion USD, an increase of 47.6% compared to the same period last year.
Notably, exports continued to grow strongly, with estimated turnover reaching US$499 billion in the first 10 months, a 27.4% increase, creating positive momentum to achieve and surpass export growth target of 15-16% for the whole year of 2026.
Export growth occurred in both domestic economic sector and foreign direct investment (FDI) sector, with processed industrial goods continuing to play a leading role, accounting for 87.4% of total export turnover. Exports also recorded positive growth in many major markets such as China, the United States, EU, South Korea and ASEAN.
Regarding trade balance, October is estimated to have a trade surplus of US$6.8 billion, marking the second consecutive month of surplus, bringing cumulative trade deficit for the first 10 months down to approximately US$12.7 billion. This result shows that import and export activities continue to maintain positive growth momentum, affirming important role of goods trade in economic growth.
Promoting export, diversifying markets and enhancing compliance capacity
Currently, Ministry of Industry and Trade is developing a draft strategy for goods export and import until 2030, with a vision to 2045. According to the draft, goal is to achieve an average annual export growth rate of 15-16% for a period of 2026-2030; and an average annual import growth rate of 12-13%. Trade balance aims for a sustainable surplus, with an average export surplus of 3-6% of total export value during this period. By 2045, Vietnam strives to be among the top 10 countries with the largest export and import values in the world; with a trade surplus of 7-10%.
One of important goals is to enhance role of domestic enterprises and increase processing and technological content in exported goods. Accordingly, proportion of export turnover from domestic enterprises in total national export turnover is targeted to reach approximately 28-30% by 2030, increasing to 38-40% by 2045. Proportion of processed or refined goods in the total export turnover is expected to reach 89-90% by 2030 and over 92% by 2045. Proportion of high-tech product exports in total export value of processed and manufactured goods is targeted to reach approximately 50% by 2030 and over 55% by 2045.
Regarding trade scale, the draft presents growth scenarios up to 2030. In medium scenario, export turnover is expected to reach US$953.7 billion by 2030; the high scenario sets a target of US$1,041.1 billion, while low scenario is US$765 billion. The scenarios show that need to expand export scale is linked to improving domestic production capacity, developing processing and manufacturing industries and increasing competitiveness of goods.
In the fourth quarter, Ministry of Industry and Trade identified need to boost exports, diversify markets and improve compliance capacity. This includes focusing on effectively exploiting signed Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), expanding into new markets; improving early warning capabilities regarding trade defense cases, tariff barriers, green standards, traceability and rules of origin.
At the same time, it aims to support businesses in improving product quality, building brands and ensuring transparency in supply chain. It also aims to promote official exports, expand agreements/protocols on agricultural product quarantine; strengthen investment in cold chain logistics infrastructure and standardize growing areas and packaging facilities to meet regulations of each partner market.
