Import-export and trade balance of FDI sector versus domestic enterprises
Tuesday, October 6,2026
AsemconnectVietnam - In the first eight months of 2026, the FDI sector continued to play a leading role, increasing its contribution and accounting for a dominant share of the country's total import-export turnover.
Although the sector maintained a trade surplus in August and throughout the eight-month period, the scale of this surplus declined sharply compared to the same period the previous year.
Meanwhile, domestic enterprises consistently recorded a trade deficit, both on a monthly basis and over the period as a whole. Overall, the trade balance highlights a stark contrast between the FDI sector's trade surplus trend and the persistent trade deficit of domestic enterprises.
The total import-export turnover of the FDI sector in August of 2026 reached US$86.35 billion, up by 0.85% from July of 2026 and 37.02% from August of 2025. This sector accounted for 78.71% of the country's total import-export turnover in August of 2026, up from 78.01% in July of 2026 and 75.88% in August of 2025.
In the first eight months of 2026, the total import-export turnover of the FDI sector reached US$589.76 billion, an increase of 38.58% compared to the same period of 2025, representing 76.58% of the country's total trade value (up from 71.17% in the same period of 2025).
Regarding the trade balance, the FDI sector recorded a trade surplus of US$2.17 billion in August of 2026. The total trade surplus for the FDI sector during the first eight months of 2026 stood at US$9.3 billion, a decrease of 70.17% compared to the US$31.18 billion recorded in the same period of 2025.
Meanwhile, domestic enterprises recorded a trade deficit of US$2.28 billion in August of 2026. In the first eight months of 2026, the total trade deficit of domestic enterprises amounted to US$29.76 billion.
