Fertilizer export markets remain heavily concentrated in Asia

AsemconnectVietnam - Calculations from the figures of the General Department of Customs showed that, Vietnam’s export market structure during the first eight months of 2026 continued to show a high concentration in Asia.
Vietnam exported a total of 2.05 million tonnes of fertilizer valued at US$1.11 billion, marking increases of 36.57% in volume and 78.22% in value compared to the same period of 2025.
The exports to the ASEAN region alone reached 889,760 tonnes valued at US$428.84 million, an increase of 18.98% in volume and 39.19% in value, accounting for 38.55% of both total export volume and total export turnover. This demonstrates that ASEAN remains Vietnam's most important fertilizer consumption market, with growth rates maintaining a solid pace.
Within ASEAN, Cambodia remained the largest market, importing 475,310 tonnes valued at US$211.25 million; this represents 18.99% of both total export volume and total export turnover, based on the market structure outlined in the data. Although export volume to Cambodia declined by 2.84% year-on-year, the export turnover rose by 8.24%, indicating an improvement in the average export value. With its significant market scale and favorable geographical location, Cambodia continues to play a vital role in Vietnam's fertilizer export activities.
The Philippines is emerging as a market experiencing very rapid growth. During the first eight months of 2026, Vietnam exported 152,280 tonnes of fertilizer to the Philippines, valued at US$80.76 million, an increase of 121.51% in volume and 174.31% in value compared to the same period of 2025. The exports to this market accounted for 7.26% of the total export turnover. Meanwhile, the exports to Malaysia reached 103,370 tonnes valued at US$57.79 million, marking increases of 10.18% in volume and 46.39% in value. Myanmar also recorded significant growth, with export volume rising by 57.29% and value by 83.41%. Meanwhile, the exports to Laos totaled 69,130 tonnes valued at US$23.98 million, up by 42.24% in volume and 21.27% in value.
In Northeast Asia, South Korea remained the most notable market. During the first eight months of 2026, the exports to South Korea reached 159,690 tonnes valued at US$113.07 million, an increase of 45.29% in volume and 149.84% in value year-on-year, accounting for 10.17% of total export turnover. Consequently, South Korea has become one of Vietnam's most important fertilizer export markets, ranking second only to Cambodia. The exports to Japan reached 30,990 tonnes valued at US$21.28 million, an increase of 10.62% in volume and 56.19% in value. Conversely, the exports to Taiwan totaled 18,520 tonnes valued at US$11.50 million, a decline of 39.33% in volume and 11.36% in value, highlighting a clear divergence among Northeast Asian markets.
Vietnam's fertilizer export market continued to expand in both scale and value during the first eight months of 2026. ASEAN remained a key region, with Cambodia serving as the largest market, while the Philippines, South Korea, Myanmar, and Thailand demonstrated notable growth rates. Notably, the export turnover grew faster than export volume, indicating an improvement in the average value of exported fertilizers; this helped boost total export value despite a year-on-year decline in volume during August. These trends provide a foundation for businesses to maintain their presence in traditional markets while simultaneously expanding into markets with rapidly rising demand.
