India led Vietnam's seafood import market share in 8 months of 2026

AsemconnectVietnam - VITIC’s calculations based on data from the General Department of Vietnam Customs showed that Vietnam's seafood import value in August of 2026 stood at US$275.36 million, a 5.3% decrease compared to July of 2026.
For the first eight months of 2026, the total import value of this category reached US$2.13 billion, a marginal decline of 1.02% year-on-year. Despite the slight overall downward trend, market shares and growth rates varied significantly across different supplying countries.
August 2026 import value fell slightly; strong growth from the US and Japan
Statistics indicated that Vietnam's total seafood import value in August of 2026 reached US$275.36 million, down by 5.3% from July of 2026. While the overall trend was slightly downward, the import performance varied markedly across supplying markets.
In August of 2026, Indonesia was the largest seafood supplier to Vietnam by value, reaching US$36.79 million, despite a 14.6% drop compared to July of 2026. India followed with US$30.41 million, a decrease of 19.92%. Japan ranked third with US$28.79 million, marking a strong increase of 42.02% compared to July of 2026. The United States and Japan recorded the highest growth rates in import value compared to July of 2026, with increases of 45.41% and 42.02%, respectively. Conversely, Chile and Russia experienced the sharpest declines, at 30.73% and 23.28%, respectively.
First eight months of 2026: India led in market share.
In the first eight months of 2026, Vietnam's total seafood import value reached US$2.13 billion, a slight decrease of 1.02% compared to the same period of 2025.
India maintained its position as Vietnam's largest seafood supplier during this period. The imports from this market totaled US$325.86 million, a slight increase of 0.23% year-on-year, accounting for 15.28% of the country's total seafood import value.
Indonesia ranked second with an eight-month import value of US$252.36 million (down by 17.94% year-on-year), representing an 11.83% share. Norway held third place with US$227.83 million (down by 3.06%), accounting for 10.68% of the total.
The data from the first eight months of 2026 reflected a distinct divergence in the structure of Vietnam's seafood import markets. The markets achieving the highest growth in import value compared to the same period of 2025 included the United States (up by 33.87%), China (up by 20.73%), and Japan (up by 15.43%). Among these, the United States was the market showing the strongest growth, both in August of 2026 (+45.41%) and in the cumulative eight-month period (+33.87%).
Conversely, the import values from several sources declined compared to the first eight months of 2025. The sharpest drops were recorded by South Korea (-25.45%), the Philippines (-22.11%), Taiwan (-21.14%), and Indonesia (-17.94%). Markets such as Russia (-8.27%), Chile (-5.03%), and Norway (-3.06%) also saw a contraction in import value compared to the same period last year.
Overall, Vietnam's total seafood import value for the first eight months of 2026 remained stable, comparable to the same period last year (with a slight decline of 1.02%); the five largest markets including India, Indonesia, Norway, Japan, and China accounted for 58.13% of the industry's total import value.
