Vietnam's total merchandise export turnover reached $54.79 billion in August 2026, marking an increase of 3.2%, or $1.7 billion, compared with the previous month, according to the Vietnam Customs.
Computers, electronic products, and components contributed the majority of the monthly expansion. Specifically, the category registered an export value of $15.85 billion in August, lifting the eight-month total to $101.06 billion.
Accounting for approximately 27% of Vietnam’s overall export earnings in the 8-month period, the figure represents a 51.1% surge, or an increase of $34.16 billion, year on year.
Growth was broad-based across major trading partners. In the period, exports of these goods to the United States reached $38.73 billion, up 48.4%; mainland China climbed 56.4% to $17.24 billion; Hong Kong (China) rose 41.2% to $9.72 billion; and South Korea increased 13.5% to $6.23 billion.
Several destinations recorded exceptionally sharp gains, such as Mexico with $2.09 billion, up 140%, and Taiwan (China) with $2.04 billion, advancing 96.8% compared to the same period in 2025.
Meanwhile, aggregate imports of computers, electronic products, and components over the eight-month period surged to $161.63 billion, up 68.3%, or $65.59 billion, year on year.
This single product category made up nearly 41% of Vietnam's aggregate import bill.
Mainland China stood as the largest supplier, providing $59.26 billion worth of shipments, an increase of 76.8%. South Korea ranked second at $43.36 billion, surging nearly 80%, while imports from Taiwan (China) stood at $26.85 billion, up 79.3%. Japan supplied $6.7 billion, up 24.4%.
Consequently, against eight-month outbound sales of $17.24 billion to China, Vietnam ran a trade deficit in computers, electronics, and components of approximately $42.02 billion with China, equivalent to roughly 2.5 times its export value.

Notably, the 68.3% rise in imports significantly outpaced the 51.1% gain in exports.
The Vietnam Electronic Industries Association (VEIA) noted that inbound spending was predominantly concentrated in chips, memory modules, processors, display panels, circuit boards, and other raw components deployed for manufacturing, assembly, packaging, testing, and system integration bound for export.
The association added that while these figures underscore the sector's rapid growth, they also highlight the pressing need to enhance domestic industrial capabilities, advance supporting industries, and increase the localized value added within each finished export item.
