Automotive parts imports saw impressive growth

AsemconnectVietnam - Vietnam's market for imported automotive parts and components has recorded impressive growth, with total turnover surpassing the US$5.03 billion mark.
China continued to assert its position as the largest supplier, accounting for over 53.55% of the national market share. Notably, the import market share held by Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) enterprises is trending downward.
According to the General Department of Customs, Vietnam's imports of automotive parts and components reached US$575.5 million in August of 2026. This represents a 10.75% decrease compared to July of 2026, driven by the cyclical nature of production schedules, a robust 25.22% increase compared to August of 2025. In the first eight months of 2026, total import turnover for this category reached US$5.03 billion, up 38.97% year-on-year.
Of the total, the imports of automotive parts by FDI enterprises amounted to US$178.18 million, marking a significant drop of 18.64% from July of 2026 and a 10.38% decline from August of 2025. The total imports by this sector in the first eight months of 2026 reached US$1.71 billion, a 7.06% increase year-on-year, representing a 34.02% share of the market (down from 44.16% during the same period of 2025). China was the largest supplier of automotive parts and components to Vietnam, with import value reaching $2.7 billion in the first eight months of 2026, a sharp increase of 98.04% year-on-year. It accounted for over half of the country's total import demand, representing a 53.55% share (up from 37.58% during the same period of 2025). Although the imports of automotive components from this market in August of 2026 fell by 11.01% compared to July of 2026 (totaling $322.81 million), the figure still represented a strong 71.38% increase compared to August of 2025.
ASEAN was the second-largest source of supply; imports of components from this region reached $90.89 million in August of 2026, down by 13.8% from July of 2026 and slightly down by 0.72% compared to August of 2025. In the first eight months of 2026, the total imports of this product from ASEAN reached US$788.18 million, a 5.94% increase compared to the same period of 2025. However, due to a growth rate lower than the industry average, ASEAN's market share contracted from 20.54% in the first eight months of 2025 to 15.65% in the same period of 2026.
The imports of automotive parts and components from South Korea in August of 2026 totaled US$63.21 million; while this represented an 11.51% decrease from July of 2026, the figure remained comparable to the same period of 2025 (up by 0.42%). Cumulatively, the imports from this market over the first eight months of 2026 reached US$592.45 million, down 3.62% year-on-year, causing its market share to shrink from 16.97% in the first eight months of 2025 to 11.77% during the same period this year.
Notably, the imports of automotive components from Russia surged by 1,248.62% in August of 2026 compared to July of 2026 and by 2,668.73% compared to August of 2025 (reaching US$3.18 million), driving an overall 95.02% increase in import value for the eight-month period (to US$17.59 million). Brazil also recorded a 221.35% increase over the eight-month period (reaching US$3.44 million). Conversely, the EU region recorded a broad-based decline, with the eight-month turnover falling by 12.67% (to US$81.20 million); specifically, the exports to Germany dropped by 13.36% and those to the Netherlands by 15.83%.
