Textile and garment material imports: promising sign for year-end orders
Wednesday, September 16,2026
AsemconnectVietnam - According to the preliminary statistics, Vietnam's textile and garment industry imported over $2.38 billion worth of materials and accessories in August of 2026, decreased by 3.78% compared to July of 2026, but increased by 7.91% year-on-year.
The imports of all categories declined month-on-month but showed solid growth compared to the same period of 2025, particularly in cotton, fibers, and yarns.
For the first eight months of 2026, the country’s total imports of textile and garment materials exceeded $19.37 billion, a 4% increase year-on-year. This reflected a continued slight improvement over previous months and surpassed the import growth rate recorded between the same periods of 2024 and 2025. Despite ongoing market difficulties and challenges, these preliminary figures signal a positive outlook for textile, garment, and footwear exports in the final months of the year. Imports across all categories recorded growth compared to the same period in 2025: fabric imports rose by 2.5%; textile, garment, and footwear materials by 3.84%; cotton by 4.28%; and fibers and yarns by 11.96%.
The demand for material imports has maintained a stable trajectory to support production and exports. Vietnam's supply of textile and garment materials remained concentrated primarily in Asia, particularly among members of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). This is the largest source market for textile and garment materials and accessories for Vietnam, with import value reaching US$12.89 billion, an increase of 5.79% year-on-year, surpassing the overall import growth rate. It accounted for 75.95% of the total import value, up from 74.23% during the same period of 2025. China was the leading supplier; in the first seven months of 2026, the imports from China totaled US$10.28 billion, rising 7.80% year-on-year and representing 60.53% of the country's total import value, an increase from 58.06% in the same period of 2025.
