AsemconnectVietnam - Industrial production continued its positive growth trajectory in August, with the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) rising by 14.4% year-on-year.

For the first eight months of the year, the IIP increased by 11.9%, marking the highest level seen in recent years.
According to the socio-economic report for August and the first eight months of 2026, released by the Statistics Office (Ministry of Finance) on the morning of September 3, industrial production maintained positive growth momentum in August. The IIP for the month rose by 1.5% compared to the previous month and by 14.4% year-on-year. Cumulatively, the IIP for the first eight months of 2026 increased by 11.9% year-on-year, representing the highest growth rate for this period in many years.
In August, the IIP for the manufacturing and processing sector rose by 14.6% year-on-year; the water supply, waste management, and wastewater treatment sector increased by 9.5%; the electricity generation and distribution sector grew by 11.8%; and the mining sector expanded by 18.5%.
For the first eight months of 2026, the IIP for the manufacturing and processing sector rose by 12.5% (compared to a 10.0% increase in the same period of 2025), contributing 9.6 percentage points to the overall growth; the mining sector increased by 8.1% (compared to a 2.1% decline in the same period of 2025), contributing 1.3 percentage points; and the electricity generation and distribution sector grew by 10.1% (compared to a 5.0% increase in the same period of 2025), contributing 0.9 percentage points. The water supply, waste management, and wastewater treatment sector grew by 9.4% (compared to 8.8% in the same period of 2025), contributing 0.1 percentage points.
Additionally, the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) for the first eight months of 2026 showed growth in several key secondary industries compared to the same period last year: metal production rose by 22.4%; beverage production by 16.4%; motor vehicle manufacturing by 15.9%; electrical equipment manufacturing by 14.6%; manufacture of electronics, computers, and optical products by 13.9%; manufacture of furniture (beds, cabinets, tables, and chairs) by 12.7%; manufacture of other non-metallic mineral products by 12.6%; manufacture of rubber and plastic products by 12.3%; wood processing and manufacture of wood, bamboo, and rattan products (excluding furniture) by 12.2%; manufacture of chemicals and chemical products, as well as crude oil and natural gas extraction, both increased by 11.9%; and food processing rose by 11.6%.
Conversely, the IIP for the leather and related products sector saw modest growth of 3.6%, while the extraction of hard coal and lignite declined by 1.8%.
Notably, the IIP for the first eight months of 2026 increased in all 34 localities compared to the same period last year. Several localities achieved significant IIP growth driven by the manufacturing and processing sector and the electricity production and distribution sector, including: Ha Tinh (up by 38.0%), Quang Ninh (up by 31.8%), Ninh Binh (up by 26.1%), Nghe An (up by 25.7%), Thai Nguyen (up by 22.6%), and Phu Tho (up by 22.1%). Localities recording significant increases in the production index for the electricity generation and distribution sector include Ha Tinh (up by 51.4%), Phu Tho (up by 18.7%), and Bac Ninh (up by 12.8%).
Conversely, some localities saw low growth in their Index of Industrial Production (IIP) due to sluggish growth or declines in the manufacturing and processing, mining, and electricity generation and distribution sectors.
Several key industrial products recorded growth in the first eight months of 2026 compared to the same period last year, such as motorcycles (up by 27.9%), laptops (up by 25.7%), automobiles (up by 24.0%), rolled steel (up by 23.4%), processed seafood (up by 21.4%), refined sugar (up by 18.5%), steel bars and angles (up by 15.2%), beer (up by 14.4%), and chemical paints (up by 12.2%). Conversely, some products saw declines compared to the same period last year, such as NPK compound fertilizers (down by 8.6%), MSG (down by 8.1%), leather footwear (down by 4.2%), and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) (down by 3.2%).
