Sustainable production and consumption promoted in textile and garment sector

 Friday, August 21,2026

AsemconnectVietnam - From energy conservation and the use of recycled materials to emissions inventorying and supply chain traceability, many textile and garment enterprises are gradually integrating the objectives of Decision No. 889/QĐ-TTg into their production and business operations.

Greening production to meet market demands
Decision No. 889/QĐ-TTg, issued by the Prime Minister to approve the National Action Program on Sustainable Production and Consumption for the 2021-2030 period, outlines key directions aimed at fostering production and consumption patterns that are efficient and environmentally friendly.
Decision No. 889 set a target to reduce the consumption of raw materials and fuel by 7-10% across several key manufacturing sectors, including the textile and garment industry.
The Program focuses on the efficient and sustainable management and utilization of natural resources, fuels, and raw materials; encourages the development of eco-friendly, renewable, reusable, and recyclable resources and products; and promotes sustainable production and consumption based on innovation and creativity, aiming to foster a circular economy.
Notably, for the period leading up to 2030, Decision No.889 aims to reduce raw material and fuel consumption by 7-10% in key manufacturing sectors, including textiles and garments.
In response to the Program, many enterprises have proactively adjusted their production methods by conserving energy, increasing the use of renewable energy, selecting eco-friendly materials, and gradually managing emissions. These measures not only contribute to environmental protection but also serve as essential preparation for meeting increasingly stringent market standards, particularly in major export markets. The textile and garment industry faces significant pressure regarding environmental standards, traceability, and emission reduction requirements in export markets. Companies in the sector are currently adopting renewable energy through various methods, such as investing in rooftop solar power systems, utilizing I-REC renewable energy certificates, and exploring Direct Power Purchase Agreements (DPPA). Notably, some enterprises have been using I-RECs since 2020 to meet client demands for emission reductions.
These corporate initiatives demonstrate that sustainable production and consumption in the textile and garment industry are increasingly being realized through concrete factory-level actions: conserving resources and energy, increasing renewable energy usage, conducting emission inventories, digitizing traceability, and selecting reusable materials. This direction aligns with the objectives of Decision No. 889/QĐ-TTg, which calls for promoting cleaner production, developing sustainable production and consumption models, and assisting enterprises in enhancing their capacity to meet environmental and sustainable development requirements within the supply chain.
