India officially opens its market to fresh Vietnamese durian
Monday, August 3,2026
AsemconnectVietnam - The Government of India has officially approved the import of fresh Vietnamese durian for human consumption, creating a new export market for one of Vietnam’s key fruit products.
According to Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, the Indian Embassy in Hanoi has notified that the Government of India issued the Plant Quarantine (Regulation of Import into India) Fifth Amendment Order, 2026, under Notification No. S.O. 3828(E) dated July 9, 2026. The Order was published in the Official Gazette of India on July 13, 2026 and took effect on the date of publication.
Under the amended regulations, India has added Vietnam to the list of countries authorized to export fresh durian for consumption in the Indian market. India does not require any additional phytosanitary declarations on the Phytosanitary Certificate, nor does it impose any special import conditions for this product.
India’s decision to open its market to Vietnamese fresh durian is the result of technical consultations and close coordination between the national plant protection authorities of the two countries. It also reflects the positive development of agricultural and trade cooperation between Vietnam and India.
With its large population, expanding middle class, and growing demand for high-quality imported food and agricultural products, India represents a promising market for Vietnamese exporters. Access to this market offers businesses an opportunity to diversify export destinations, reduce reliance on traditional markets, and enhance the value and international reputation of Vietnamese durian.
India is a new market for Vietnamese durian. During the initial stage, consumption is expected to be concentrated mainly in major cities through premium retail chains, imported fruit stores, restaurants, hotels, and e-commerce platforms. Exporters are therefore encouraged to carefully study consumer preferences, purchasing power, product specifications, transportation methods, and distribution channels in order to develop appropriate market entry strategies.
Vietnam’s Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection will continue to coordinate with Indian authorities, relevant units under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Vietnamese representative agencies in India, local authorities, and industry associations to support businesses in implementing exports. The Department will also work to promptly address any issues arising during the export process.
The opening of the Indian market to fresh Vietnamese durian is a positive milestone. However, its long-term success will depend on maintaining product quality, ensuring compliance with import regulations, building a strong reputation for Vietnamese durian, and fostering genuine consumer demand. The new market presents not only an opportunity for export expansion but also a strong incentive for Vietnam to further professionalize its durian production, packaging, storage, and export supply chain.
