Vietnam's IIP in May and first five months of 2026

AsemconnectVietnam - According to the General Statistics Office, Ministry of Finance, the Industrial Production Index (IIP) in May of 2026 was estimated to increase by 3.3% compared to the previous month and by 8.8% compared to the same period of 2025.
In May of 2026, the manufacturing sector increased by 9.0% compared to the same period last year; the water supply, waste management and wastewater treatment sector increased by 8.7%; the electricity production and distribution sector increased by 8.5%; and the mining sector increased by 6.0%.
The IIP index for some localities with large industrial scales in May of 2026 was as follows: Da Nang increased by 25.3%; Quang Ngai increased by 10.2%; Vinh Long increased by 4.4%; Can Tho increased by 4.2%; Dong Nai increased by 4.0%; Bac Ninh increased by 3.7%; Ho Chi Minh City increased by 1.2%; Quang Ninh decreased by 5.0%; Hai Phong decreased by 2.0%.
Overall, in the first five months of 2026, the industrial production index (IIP) increased by 9.1% compared to the same period last year. This was also the highest IIP increase for the first five months of the year compared to the same period last year in the last four years.
In the first five months of 2026, many key industries recorded growth compared to the same period last year, including metal production (up by 20.2%); motor vehicle production (up by 18.0%); chemical and chemical product production (up by 16.9%); production of other non-metallic mineral products (up by 16.2%); beverage production (up by 15.1%); bed, cabinet, table, and chair production (up by 11.6%); and food processing (up by 11.2%).
The production of rubber and plastic products increased by 10.9%; production of paper and paper products increased by 10.7%; production of prefabricated metal products (excluding machinery and equipment) increased by 9.6%; textiles increased by 9.3%; and production of electronic products, computers, and optical products increased by 7.5%.
However, in the first five months of this year, the Industrial Production Index (IIP) of some sectors decreased compared to the same period last year, including the hard coal and lignite mining sector which decreased by 4.6%; and the production of other transport equipment which decreased by 1.0%.
Many localities in Vietnam recorded industrial growth.
In the first five months of 2026, some localities in Vietnam achieved a relatively high IIP growth rate thanks to the processing and manufacturing industry; and the electricity production and distribution sector.
However, some localities also had low IIP growth due to the processing and manufacturing industry; Mining and electricity production and distribution sectors experienced low or declining growth.
The key industrial products in the first five months of 2026 recorded growth compared to the same period last year, including motorcycles (up by 36.0%); automobiles (up by 26.7%); processed seafood (up by 21.6%); rolled steel (up by 21.5%); refined sugar and beer (both up by 14.4%); and chemical paints (up by 14.3%).
However, the production of some industrial products recorded a decline compared to the same period last year, such as NPK compound fertilizer (down by 6.8%); MSG (down by 6.0%); leather shoes and sandals (down by 5.7%); and coal (clean coal) (down by 4.7%).
