Vietnam's coal exports showed strong growth in 4 months

AsemconnectVietnam - According to the data from the Customs Department, in April of 2026, Vietnam exported 168,880 tonnes of various types of coal worth of US$27.68 million, a sharp increase of 72.51% in volume and 71.89% in value compared to March of 2026; and an increase of 82.86% in volume and 48.44% in value compared to April of 2025.
In the first four months of 2026, the total export volume of all types of coal nationwide reached nearly 492,680 tonnes with a value of 78.1 million USD, a sharp increase of 104.14% in volume and 69.44% in value compared to the same period of 2025.
In the first four months of 2026, ASEAN was Vietnam's largest coal export market, reaching 235,460 tonnes with a value of 33.67 million USD, an increase of 104.11% in volume and 65.92% in value compared to the same period of 2025; accounting for 47.79% of the country's total coal exports (approximately 47.8% of the first four months of 2025). Of this, Indonesia was the main consumer market, accounting for 56.16% of total coal exports to ASEAN; the Philippines accounted for 27.6%; Thailand accounted for over 15% and Laos for only 1.19%. The average export price of coal to the ASEAN market in the first four months reached US$142.99/tonne, a decrease of 18.7% compared to the same period of 2025.
Japan was Vietnam's second largest coal consumer market, reaching 128.33 thousand tonnes and valued at US$20.64 million, a sharp increase of 101.88% in volume and 63.46% in value compared to the first four months of 2025; accounting for 26.05%. The export price of coal to this market in the first four months of 2026 reached US$160.87/tonne, a decrease of 19.03% compared to the same period of 2025.
Coal exports to the Netherlands in the first four months also increased sharply by 80.83% in volume and 58.38% in value compared to the same period of 2025, reaching nearly 36,380 tonnes with a value of US$7.73 million; accounting for 7.38% of the total (narrowing compared to 8.34% in the first four months of 2025).
