Car imports increased in 4 months of 2026

AsemconnectVietnam - According to the Customs Department, the number of completely assembled cars imported into Vietnam in April of 2026 reached 16,580 units with a value of US$433.82 million, a decrease of 34.35% in quantity and 26.43% in value compared to March of 2026.

In comparison to April of 2025, there was a decrease of 11.4% in quantity but an increase of 2.57% in value. Overall, in the first four months of 2026, Vietnam's total imports of completely assembled automobiles reached 72,290 units with a value of US$1.75 billion, an increase of 11.22% in volume and 25.2% in value compared to the same period in 2025.
In the first four months of 2026, Vietnam imported the most completely assembled automobiles from ASEAN, reaching 45,074 units with a value of US$734.61 million, a decrease of 6.03% in volume and 8.4% in value compared to the same period in 2025; accounting for 62.35% of Vietnam's total automobile imports (a decrease compared to the 73.8% share in the first four months of 2025). Of these, Indonesia continued to be the largest supplier with 27,170 units, an increase of 13.61% (accounting for 60.28% of total car imports from ASEAN); imports from Thailand accounted for 39.72%, equivalent to 17,904 vehicles, a decrease of 25.56% compared to the same period.
China was the second largest supplier of cars to Vietnam in the first four months of 2026, with 23,723 units worth of US$837.92 million, an increase of 68.61% in volume and 85.69% in value compared to the same period in 2025; accounting for 32.82% of the country's total car imports (an expansion compared to the 21.65% share in the same period of 2025).
Following China were the markets: Japan, accounting for 2.15%; and the EU, accounting for 0.6%. India accounts for 0.35%; the United States 0.22%; the United Kingdom 0.16%; South Korea 0.11%; and Russia 0.02%.
Overall, the volume of imported vehicles from these markets in the first four months of this year largely increased sharply compared to the same period of 2025 (especially from China, Japan, the EU, and South Korea).
Regarding import prices, according to the Customs Department, the average unit price of imported complete automobiles into Vietnam in April of 2026 reached US$26,165/vehicle, an increase of 12.06% compared to March of 2026 and an increase of 15.78% compared to April of 2025. On average, in the first four months of 2026, the import price of completely assembled cars into Vietnam reached US$24,252 per unit, an increase of 12.57% compared to the same period of 2025.
The average import price of completely assembled cars from India was the lowest at US$5,215 per unit; ASEAN reached US$16,298 per unit (a decrease of 1.32% compared to the same period). Meanwhile, the import price from Russia reached the highest at US$403,590 per unit, a sharp increase of 159.74%; imports from South Korea also saw a sharp increase of 189.51%, reaching US$94,988 per unit.
